Adobe: Sports helps drive 'TV Everywhere'

The Olympics may have been the biggest streaming sports splash thus far, but football season could stretch the field even more.

Eventually every single TV broadcast may likely be streamable to your mobile device or a second screen in your home. "We think that within two years (that is possible)," says Campbell Foster, director of product marketing for Adobe's video and ad solutions. "Certainly, the media companies and the operators see the opportunity here. It's just the matter of getting the consumers to adopt it."

Adobe Pass is an authentication method for TV Everywhere, the concept of being able to access pay TV content on computers, tablets, smartphones and other devices. More than 150 cable and satellite operators use the technology to verify customers' viewing of programming from networks and studios.

Among the latest adoptees: the Pac-12 and Big Ten Networks, which let pay TV subscribers stream live video broadcasts of Football games and other programming.

STORY: ?The college and pro football streaming line-up

U.S. pay TV subscribers engaged in more than 88 million authenticated streams during the Games, according to Adobe, which worked with NBC to verify viewers. That's the biggest single event in TV Everywhere's short history, Foster said in an interview.

Overall, nearly 7 million pay TV subscriber homes viewed Olympics content. "From Olympics and March Madness we're seeing the hockey stick growth starting to happen right now," he says.

About 70% of the streams went to computers while 30% went to tablets and smartphones. Apple iOS devices dominated with 81% of streams vs. 19% for Android-based devices.

To watch online streams of pay TV content, typically, consumers log in to an app or browser using credentials from their pay TV provider. Some Cablevision and Comcast customers who get TV and Internet from those companies are authenticated automatically when they use a second screen at home.

Foster expects growth as consumers become more comfortable with devices and authentication becomes easier. "It's making the most of your pay TV service," he says. "If you pay for cable TV, you can access most of that content if not all of it, through your iPad or your Android device."

Talkin' Israel at the RNC

By Nathan Guttman

Condoleezza Rice

For a convention focused on the economy and taxes at a time when foreign policy is hardly considered an issue, any mention of Israel at the GOP gathering is worth noticing.

It may not amount to 15 minutes of fame, but a 95-second video in a tight convention schedule is also something. The video, titled Israel: Cherished Memories, summarizes Mitt Romney?s July visit to Jerusalem with highlights from his speech and the obligatory photo ops at the Western Wall and with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu.

Israel also got brief shout outs in the foreign policy speeches Wednesday of John McCain and former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

But behind the scenes, Israel is a major issue for all those involved in Jewish politics and Middle East advocacy. The American Israel Public Affairs Committee held receptions for Republican lawmakers and delegates and the Republican Jewish Coalition hosted a salute for pro-Israel elected officials. Taking the stage at the event, the Senators and members of Congress made the case for voting Republican, because of Israel.

?I don?t know how there are any Jewish Democrats,? said Missouri Republican Billy Long, ?With what Obama did to Bibi Netanayahu, I don?t know how there are any Jewish Democrats.?

Ted Cruz, who Republicans hope will be the next Senator from Texas, took on the Iran issue, telling the audience that if Iran ?is getting too close? to becoming nuclear, ?I?m sure Israel will act.? He added that in case on an Israeli attack, he?d be ?thankful? because Israel would be acting to protect American security as well.

A more nuanced approach was presented by South Carolina?s Lindsey Graham who sits on the Senate Armed Services committee. Graham told the Forward that a future Romney administration would ?give Iran a clear choice? and that he will ?give red lines to the Iranian regime.?

No one seemed to have the appetite for getting into details. Speakers on the convention podium, including Condoleezza Rice spoke in general about taking back America?s leading role in the world, instead of ?leading from behind,? but did not provide much substance. Advisers to the Romney campaign also avoided wading into the specifics of a future Republican administration?s policy regarding the Syrian civil war, Iran?s nuclear ambitions, or the moribund Israeli ? Palestinians peace process.

Philippine economy grows 5.9% in second quarter

The Philippines said Thursday the economy grew a better-than-forecast 5.9 percent in the three months to June, largely due to a strong services sector.

And the government said the second-quarter figures -- which also saw growth in the first half at 6.1 percent after a strong 6.3 percent expansion in January-March -- would continue for the rest of 2012.

"The resilient services sector remained the main driver of growth," said Lina Castro, secretary general of the National Statistics Coordination Board.

Independent analysts had widely predicted 5.4 to 5.8 percent growth in the second quarter.

Castro said the services sector had accounted for 4.3 percentage points of the growth figure for the three-month period, while industry accounted for 1.5 percentage points and agriculture 0.1 points.

The figures led Socio-economic Planning Secretary Arsenio Balisacan to predict "we will be close to the upper end of the (5.0-6.0 percent) range", for the whole of 2012.

The momentum of growth "will not dissipate in the succeeding quarters", he told reporters.

He cited "accelerated government spending on infrastructure" for helping growth, as well as low inflation, improved exports, rising tourist arrivals and the continued remittances of about 10 million Filipino overseas workers.

A rash of storms and heavy rains that caused massive flooding in Manila and surrounding areas in recent months were unlikely to have a huge effect on the growth rate in 2012, Balisacan added.

"Their impact on agriculture was quite modest and their likely impact (on the whole economy) was also quite modest," he said.

But he warned that the economy faced challenges for the rest of the year stemming from the global economic slowdown and the expected return of the "El Nino" weather phenomenon.

Our First Pets! Thanks, Diet Care. @ 24/7 Parents

Posted in August 30, 2012 ? 12:19h.Subway Mom

As I wrote in my previous post, the Diet Care Nutrievent allowed us to adopt the goldfish they had used for centerpieces.

20120830-121655.jpg

I went online and read about how to care for goldfish as soon as I walked in through the door. The first relief was that I didn?t need to run out to the pet store to get fish flakes. So far our fish are not interested in corn itself, but seem to like cornflakes. :)

Mimi and Oullie?s reactions were amazing. These little dears are my kids? first pets! Mimi was in total disbelief! Oullie, on the other hand, was so excited he totally forgot I existed and ran over to great the fish with a ?Fishiiiieeeeeees!? :D

20120830-121704.jpg

We even added a Puss in Boots figure. He serving as a decoration and hiding place. The silliness of a cat in the fish bowl just couldn?t be avoided. :D

20120830-121713.jpg

I do feel sorry for the fish though because they are hearing a lot of shrieking. Oullie shrieks, ?Fishiieeees!? every time he passes by their bowl. Which is ever 5 seconds.

As Mimi stated, ?fish are easier to take care of than cats because they stay in one place?Oh yesssss, honey! No cat is coming into this household till you kids are old enough to take care of it!

Grown-up Friendships and a Little Gift for You

Children make friends in 2.3 seconds. That is in no way a clinical assessment, of course, but a simple observation on my part.

No joke. My kids are off to the playground and literally as soon as she?s stepped foot into the wood chips, my six-year-old is holding the hand of a little-girl-stranger and they are play acting at fairies and mermaids.

Happens every time.

Adults are hard pressed to become friends that quickly. It takes us closer to 2.3 years. Again, I learn that not from empirical data but from living life. And especially when friendships change from youth-fueled, school-fueled relationships to the ones we have to maintain as adults, things can be at the very least tricky.

Most friendships don?t make it through that transition. {That?s why we have those embarrassing things called reunions}

And what the heck are adult friendships supposed to look even like? When we are young we are conditioned to understand that regular contact with friends somehow equals close relationship and irregular connection means we?ve drifted.

What about when people get married or get new jobs or move to Hemet (which, for all intents and purposes, it is as if they?ve moved to the moon)? What happens when life and kids and church and everything else puts natural barriers between me and someone I love very much and want to maintain relationship with?

We just make it work.

Lisa and I?ve been friends for a very long time and we?ve seen our friendship move from everyday college roommate living, to once a month supper clubs, to now, our much more intentional friendship. She lives 4 hours away from me yet we make it work to see each other several times a year.

Is it ideal? No. Do I wish she lived next door and our kids rode bikes down the street together? Of course. Do I wish I could call her up right now and meet up in 15 minutes for a hike or a long chat over tea? Yes. But that isn?t what life is for us.

And that?s okay. We make it work as it is.

I don?t know what a good adult friendship is supposed to look like, but I know what ours does. And it is very good.

Lisa has a new line out from Dayspring called the Lisa Leonard Faith Collection . It is available only from Dayspring and not available on her site at all. It?s a beautiful collection of hand stamped, personally crafted jewelry pieces that reflect the journey that we are all on together: as women, sisters, and as friends.

Here?s a little gift for my readers: Enter LLD15 at checkout and you can get %15 off of any of the Lisa Leonard Faith Collection ? items. That code is only good until September 15th.

And until Friday only the By Grace Alone Necklace will still be $10 dollars off (which means it?s only $26 until the end of August).

My personal favorite is the Well With My Soul Necklace. I love it.

How to get on page 1 of Google | Learn How To ... - Online Business ...

To have a successful online business and make sales, you will need customers to come to your website or blog and in order to achieve this you must have a good marketing idea to generate the traffic. With the internet full of textual information you need something that stands out.
So what catches people?s eye? What to do to attract a certain customer and how to present your content in a way that will have customers flocking to your site. Videos, OK this is not new and there are videos all over the web but when people search for something online, they are expecting the search results to show text headers, one on top of the other.

It?s the normal way of promoting a business online. Online or offline, businesses depend on good marketing. A good campaign can make all the difference to a new business.

If you are presented with a video clip after you type in your search words to the search engines, your eyes are drawn to the stills picture that is inviting you to click on it to see the video. We are often intrigued by the video and prefer to see a video clip for what we are looking for rather than read a headline.

After clicking on that clip, you are immediately taken to the marketing video. The company has created to deliver visitors to a website or page on the internet. You will then spend some time watching that video normally they are short, from 2 to 10 minuets.

Below the video is a well placed link to the company?s website, page or blog that invites you to go for more information, free gift or eBook. The main object of the video was to get the potential customer to this final destination and hopefully their website is designed well enough to convert the visitor into a sale.

Video marketing is big business with some major companies charging thousands of dollars an hour to produce a marketing video for the websites specific niche. But with many online video programs now available to everyone who has an internet connection, it?s possible for anyone to make and produce their own videos and upload them to web hosting companies like YouTube.

If you do try video marketing, it is very powerful and converts traffic into sales extremely well, also providing something very different from text style adverts, the smaller online businesses are now taking advantage of this and generating larger amounts of traffic to their websites.

The internet is full of textual headlines in the search results, maybe its time to try something a little different. Video marketing has been here for a while now but still many small businesses have not tried it, have a try, you may be surprised at the results.

Samsung ATIV Smart PC dock hands-on

And hey, what's a Windows 8 tablet without a docking station? Sure enough, Samsung was showing off a snazzy one tonight that turns your bright and beautiful ATIV Smart PC (which is a bit chunkier than its brother) into a notebook. The tablet slots into the top of the keyboard dock, with the Windows 8 button obscured slightly by the top of the dock. The device does look a fair amount like a netbook when it's firmly nestled inside. But we have to say, the quality of the dock doesn't match the beauty of the tablet itself, the plasticky bottom clashing with the brushed aluminum backing, particularly where the lip shows up slightly on the rear of the device.

When using the dock, you're likely going to spend most of your time in the classic UI -- and when you want to switch, you can just hit the button at the top of the dock to release the tablet from its docky prison. The buttons and trackpad feel a bit like a low-end netbook, and we had to do some fiddling to get that mouse across the desktop. We're hoping that Samsung will either release a slicker version or we'll be seeing something from a third-party manufacturer. In the meantime, the dock feels more like a second home for the tablet, best saved for those rare occasions when you'll need to do, say, some serious word processing.

Obama Finalizes Landmark Fuel Efficiency Standards

As Republicans gather in Tampa, despite an imminent hurricane, to officially nominate a presidential candidate who remains mute on climate change and its potential to flood convention centers in low-lying areas, President Obama has finalized landmark new fuel-efficiency standards that will cut tailpipe greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2025.

The new standard will require cars, pickup trucks, and SUVs to achieve 54.5 miles per gallon, or approximately double the average mileage of cars on the road today, over the next 13 years.

This is the third time Obama has raised fuel economy standards, building upon the 2009 goal of 35.5 miles per gallon by 2016. The action cements the administration's commitment to reducing America's dependency on oil as part of Obama's national energy policy.

RELATED: Will Obama and Romney Talk About Climate Change During the Presidential Debate?

Romney's campaign was quick to respond to the announcement, highlighting the sharp contrast between the two candidates when it comes to their respective plans for powering the nation.

"Governor Romney opposes the extreme standards that President Obama has imposed, which will limit the choices available to American families. The President tells voters that his regulations will save them thousands of dollars at the pump, but always forgets to mention that the savings will be wiped out by having to pay thousands of dollars more upfront for unproven technology that they may not even want,? said Romney spokeswoman Andrea Saul in a statement.

While the Administration doesn't deny that the new standards will increase the cost of a new car, perhaps by as much as $2,000, the White House argues that the $8,000 a new car owner is forecast to save over the life of the car should more than compensate for a higher price sticker at the car dealership.

?These fuel standards represent the single most important step we?ve ever taken to reduce our dependence on foreign oil,? President Obama said in a statement Tuesday. ?It?ll strengthen our nation's energy security, it?s good for middle class families and it will help create an economy built to last.?

The nation's biggest and most influential green groups have been outspoken in their support of Obama's efforts.

Margie Alt, Executive Director of Environment America, said that "Decades from now, the clean car standards finalized today by the Obama Administration will be highlighted as a monumental turning point in America?s quest to get off oil and tackle global warming."

Sierra Club Executive Director, Michael Brune, said "Today, President Obama has taken the most significant action by any President in history to move our country off oil and slash dangerous, climate disrupting pollution that threatens our children?s future."

Turns Out Only About Half of the US Can Actually Stream Video From

the internet is serious business

If there?s an inherent bias in blogging, it?s that the blogger and their audience, are necessarily in a place that has a steady internet connection. Don?t got an internet connection? You?re way less likely to blog, read a blog, comment on a blog, or get into the ideas that regularly sweep the internet. The internet idea that?s probably most relevant to this particular news item?

That the world is ready for streaming, a la carte television to become the default way that folks get their cable subscriptions delivered to them.

This week the FCC released their eigth?Broadband Progress Report, on the state of broadband internet service in the U.S., and they?ve collected some pretty interesting info. While broadband internet is available in 96% of American households, only 60% of Americans actually subscribe to the service. And of those 60%, only a minority of them actually get download speeds as high as 4 megabits per second, the minimum required speed for actual broadband as defined by the FCC. Most households are getting along with 768 kilobits a second. It?s hard to say whether this is because of subscriber preference, or because, well, many cable companies don?t exactly work very hard to guarantee that the speed they advertise is the speed you get.

As Livescience points out, the bare minimum download speed for Netflix videos is 500 kbps, and that?s for particularly poor quality video. Now, I can?t wait for the day when I can sign up for a television service that allows a la carte purchases of shows rather than bundles of channels, but at the same time, I couldn?t fault Netflix for their price increase when literally every company they need to deal with to remain solvent would rather they be out of business. If streaming internet video is simply not an option for the majority of Americans, the day of streaming access to popular television on a show by show basis may be further off than we?d like, and there may be some hurdles in the way that have nothing to do with big?entertainment?companies concerns over piracy or ad revenue.

Debt to Income Ratio too High? Auto Loan ... - Find My Way Home

Debt to income auto loanYour debt to income ratio is what determines how much you qualify for when applying for a home loan.

If you find yourself butting up against the ceiling of your DTI (debt to income), you might not want to give up yet.

Reducing Debt

The debt portion of a debt to income ratio is what is reported on your credit report. ?Being as familiar as I am with credit reporting, I know that there?s a good chance that it?s not completely 100% accurate.

check your credit report for accuracy

The first thing you should do is check your credit report to make sure there are no closed accounts or old collection/charge offs still reporting a payment. ?It is not at all uncommon for closed accounts to still show a payment due.

Auto Loan Solution

Auto loans can be an opportunity to reduce your debt to income ratio very quickly.

When you finance an automobile for 36 or 60 months, that financing is called an installment loan.

Here is the guideline per Fannie Mae Underwriting Guidelines:

?All installment debt that is not secured by a financial asset?including student loans, automobile loans, and home equity loans?must be considered part of the borrower?s recurring monthly debt obligations if there are more than ten monthly payments remaining.?

?under 10 months left not considered

As is typical with most underwriting guidelines, it?s what they?didn?t say?that you have to pay attention to. ?What this guideline also says is that installment debt with less than ten monthly payments do not need to be considered.

If you currently have less than 10 months left on your auto loan, make sure your lender is excluding this payment from your debt to income ratio.

Pro Tip: ?Reduce principle to reduce pay off

If you have more than 10 months left on your auto loan, you still have options. ?You can pay down the principle balance of the loan.

Here?s how it works: ?

  • Say your payment is $200 a month and you have a balance of $2,800
  • Your $200 payment for 10 months is $2,000.
  • To eliminate the $200 payment from your DTI, you would make a principle payment of $800.
  • Once you?ve made the payment, ask the auto dealer to produce a current statement showing the new principle balance.

Before paying your auto loan down, review the scenario with your loan officer. ?Guidelines can change at any time and lenders can over-lay more restrictive guidelines.

There are many opportunities to reduce your debt to income ratio. ?This is one way it can be done.

If you have any questions about qualifying or increase the amount you qualify for, feel free to submit a private question, leave a public comment or give us a call.

Some Easy Ways To Make Your Home Improvements Go Smoothly ...

All of the information available might be overwhelming. However, there are some basics that no one who is considering a project should be without. See the article below for helpful hints.

Try to determine in advance the amount of paint you will need for any painting job. Simply guessing could cost you a lot of money. The time you invest on properly assessing the job will be time and money that you save in the end.

Think twice about improving with a personal touch. The more personal your renovations, the less likely you will have buyers that wish to purchase it for the price of your work.

Light-colored roofing is a great investment. The lighter color will reflect the suns rays instead of absorbing them, reducing the heat build up in your attic. Simple tips like the color of your roof can add up to big savings over the lifetime of a roof.

Store any building materials in the portion between your floor joists or ceiling rafters. Two by fours or molding can all be stored in this area. You can easily hammer in furring strips across a couple of exposed rafters or floor joists and put in the material that needs to be stored.

When renovating your home, you should never go above your budget. By having a set budget, you are making sure the remodeling work does not exceed the reasonable range of your house and neighborhood, in addition to not breaking the bank. Create a detailed budget and follow it as you work on your project.

Add insulation as part of the next home improvement job. Use weather-stripping on all windows and doors. You can cut costs when you prevent air from escaping and coming in your home. This will save you money on energy costs.

Old toothbrushes can be used to clean your house. Old toothbrushes work for a multitude of surfaces such as the kitchen sink?s faucet area or even your car?s engine parts. The best thing is that they don?t cost anything. No need to buy something new; utilize what yo have available. Conserve that money for other expenditures.

As you tackle home improvements, be mindful to observe your surroundings, making sure to do just those projects that are sensible. Making strange changes to your home that do not take its setting into consideration can cause problems when you want to sell. Stick with the things that are wanted and keep your projects acceptable to the climate in which your home is in.

Change the doors to your cupboards. Not everyone can go out and buy new cabinets. If we just change out the doors, however, we get a new look for a very reasonable price. However, before starting on this project you will want to measure everything exactly so you know what it is needed beforehand. Installation can be very simple. Ensure that the new doors are securely screwed in and you are all done!

Completing home improvement projects on your own is quite fulfilling. You just need the right knowledge so that you can create your plan and follow through on it. This can reduce errors in the future.

Pets Can Get the Back-to-School Blues - Poway, CA Patch

Summer vacation officially came to a close for thousands of local children and teens last week. I?m sure there are lots of kids out there who are feeling the Back to School Blues, but did you know that students aren?t the only ones who feel anxious and sad when school goes back in session?

Dogs and cats thrive on routine, and during the summer they get used to having kids and even parents home more often for attention and playtime. When school starts and everyone is gone all day, it can be upsetting for our pets and can even cause separation anxiety to act up.

If you notice your pooch or feline acting clingy and depressed ? or if you come home to find items disturbed or torn up ? it?s a safe bet that they are not dealing well with the transition. Here are a few tricks to help ease your pets back into their new back-to-school routine.

Get the kids involved: During the summertime, kids have more time to give love and playtime to your pets. When school starts, try to replace that old routine with a new one. If your pets know that the kids get home every day at 2:45 and will play and cuddle them, they will have a new routine to look forward to. If your kids do homework every day after dinner, let the pets help them study by curling up at their feet or by their side.

Get your pets moving: Take your dog for a long walk or run or have your kids play ball with him before you all leave in the morning. If you have a feline, run around the house with a string toy to wear her out. Feed them breakfast after the activity. The exercise and full belly will hopefully result in a relaxed, sleepy pet who naps all day and doesn?t even notice you?re gone.

Don?t be dramatic: Avoid the emotional, sad goodbyes when you leave in the morning ? it will only upset you and your pet. Instead, make your goodbye brief and upbeat. Whenever I leave the house, my dog Blue runs right for his treats and looks at me expectantly. That?s because he?s learned to associate me leaving with a good thing ? yummy treats. If your dog is treat motivated, this may help you get out the door with less trauma for both parties. If the mere sight of picking up your keys or kid?s backpack upsets your pet, try picking up the items and walking around the house without actually leaving. This should help your pet not to associate those items with impending doom.

The most important thing is to have patience with your pets as they adjust to everyone?s new schedule. They can get lonely, nervous or anxious just like people ? especially since they don?t understand that we?ll always return home to them.

Paul delegates mounting floor fight over new rules

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Rep. Ron Paul's delegates are trying to mount a floor fight over new GOP rules designed to limit the ability of insurgent presidential candidates to amass delegates to future Republican conventions.

It is unclear whether they can rally enough support to force a vote on alternative rules. But they could provide an unwanted distraction to party leaders and Mitt Romney, the party's presumptive nominee.

New GOP rules would bind delegates to the outcome of presidential primaries, allowing candidates to choose which delegates would represent them at future national conventions. Currently, state parties choose national delegates, usually at state conventions.

Critics say the new rule would limit the ability of state parties to reward local activists. Delegate Thomas Boggia of Pennsylvania called the new rules "a power grab from D.C. insiders."

Syphilis epidemic rising in the Canada and U.S. | AguiLeon Health ...

The resurgence of syphilis has risen dramatically over the past 20 years in the United States and Canada --- from 177 cases in 1993 to 1,750 cases in 2010. It is temporarily shutting down the porn industry in Southern California.

Adult Production Health & Safety Services (APHSS) sounded the alarm about "recent unsubstantiated rumors of syphilis among adult performers." The usual annual testing for syphilis is in September, but because of the alarm the agency opened up their semi-annual syphilis testing immediately.

Other sexually transmitted diseases, such as gonorrhea and chlamydia, are also on the rise. According to Huffington Post, "Syphilis infection rates jumped by 18 percent from 2010 to 2011, and there was also a five percent increase in chlamydia and 1.5 percent increase in gonorrhea cases." And truthfully, the syphilis outbreak cluster among California porn performs is not surprising because of their business. But sexually transmitted diseases are spreading on a worldwide basis --- with Canada and the United States no exceptions.

APHSS has since called for a temporary moratorium on adult film production until all performers get tested for syphilis, and the non-profit AIDS Healthcare Foundation is also expected to hold a news conference Monday morning in response to the possible outbreak.

"I think it's just a general indicator of what's happening in terms of sexual activity," said Dr. Howard Njoo of the Public Health Agency of Canada, director general of PHAC's Centre for Communicable Diseases and Infection Control. The majority of syphilis cases are among men, accounting for 90.5 percent of all reported cases in 2010. But according to Njoo, the dynamics of the disease are different from other STDs. Gonorrhea and chlamydia are attacking the younger people while syphilis is attacking the older ones. People who are age 30 and older are accounting for approximately 73 per cent of all the reported syphilis cases in 2010. Huffington Post reports that, "Syphilis is a bacterial STD that initially manifests itself in sores or sometimes presents no symptoms. If the infection isn't treated immediately, people who have syphilis can go on to suffer rashes and lesions, hair loss and flu-like symptoms like muscle aches, fevers, sore throats and fatigue. Without treatment, syphilis could last for years and go on to damage internal organs and cause stillbirths. If caught early, the infection is easily treated with antibiotics such as penicillin."

Aviation Wheel Chock Guidelines | articlereference.net

Aviation wheel chocks are a must for safety in the aircraft industry. Used for parking safety and during motor examination methods, this piece of plane defense mustn?t be ignored. Different styles are available, made from various materials, and each application must be suited to the specific aircraft and conditions under that they are anticipated to perform.Wheel Chock ConstructionIn the past, aircraft wheel chocks were made from wood, but since the chocks are usually situated outside, the wear and tear of climate could affect their performance by the wood rotting away. Other facets include plane fuels and lubricants that weaken the timber. Flight wheel will also be obtainable in rubber, all over again, the erosion potential may be large after just a few seasons. The highest quality chocks is likely to be made from urethane, using reaction injection molding (RIM) technology. This durable memory material is extremely scratching and temperature resistant and is maintenance free, opposing flammable and toxic fuels. These chocks are extremely impact resistant and won?t rot, split or splinter with time. They are identified as with the characters FOD and a circle with a slash over it to represent, No Foreign Object Damage ? nothing may corrode it.Aviation Wheel Chock GuidelinesAs with any wheel chock, aviation wheel have guidelines that really must be adopted to make certain the protection of the product. The different conditions, including the size and breadth of the aircraft tire, the type of tire, the gross aircraft fat, the tire pressure differences that occur with temperature and wear and finally the type and state of the chocking area (dry, moist, freezing, firm or soft) can affect the chock?s usefulness. When choosing which dimension to utilize most of the factors mentioned previously must certanly be taken into consideration. An airplane company or military unit (who also use chocks for safety) probably has their particular established guidelines that must be adopted, therefore make sure to give accordingly.Test the ChockA couple of aviation wheel must go through extensive testing to assure that the chocks may match the objectives. D assurance is good if they?re perhaps not applied properly. Numerous mixtures of the aircraft and area size can play a role in the effectiveness. Do not check the chocks beyond cause, nevertheless. Additionally, you should know to get rid of the chocks before going the aircraft.Shape and SizeAviation wheel chocks usually appear to be a parking fender, with a flat area, a small incline and then flat on the top. They can are available in multiple sizes, 14 inches, 20 inches and around 56 inches for larger aircraft. They typically come in safety yellow to tell the consumer to take them out before traveling, and the military type have a rope lock method. When you buy your flight wheel chocks, you might even be able to have a tailored emblem branded upon them. Be safe!

Kuwaiti firm: Carlyle Group acted without license

KUWAIT CITY (AP) ? A Kuwaiti company suing the Carlyle Group over a $25 million investment that went bad is now accusing the private equity firm of marketing the deal without a license as it seeks to have its case heard in Kuwaiti courts.

The latest claim by Kuwait's National Industries Group adds a new twist to its more than two-and-a-half year legal challenge to Carlyle, and could complicate the American company's relationships with other wealthy Mideast investors.

NIG's lawsuit focuses on a Carlyle investment fund that was one of the earliest casualties of the financial crisis when it collapsed in 2008. The fund has been the subject of multiple lawsuits against Washington-based Carlyle.

In a motion filed this month with a Delaware court hearing the case, NIG argues that the dispute should be heard in Kuwait because Carlyle lacked the legal basis to pitch the deal there in the first place.

Selling foreign securities or shares in investment funds in Kuwait requires a license from local authorities, according to a declaration by lawyer Ahmed Zakaria Abdel-Magied filed by NIG attorneys. He added that marketing such investments without a license makes the underlying deal invalid.

NIG said Sunday it believes it is entitled to the return of its $25 million investment under Kuwaiti law.

"Carlyle was more than happy to conduct its sales presentations in Kuwait and close its deals in Kuwait," NIG's general manager, Ahmed Hassan, said in a statement. "But now that the moment has come to deal with the ugly aftermath ... Carlyle would prefer to try its luck in Delaware."

Carlyle has tried hard to woo clients in the oil-rich Gulf Arab states. It opened an office in the Mideast financial hub of Dubai in 2006, and its shareholders include Mubadala Development Co., an investment company owned by the United Arab Emirates capital, Abu Dhabi.

The Carlyle fund involved in the Kuwait case, known as Carlyle Capital Corp. Ltd., went bust in March 2008. It used high levels of debt to invest in securities backed by bundles of home mortgages that had been given a seemingly safe AAA rating by credit rating agencies.

Carlyle declined to comment on the case Sunday. It has previously said it will fight NIG's suit.

"We believe these claims are without merit and intend to vigorously contest all such allegations and are currently unable to anticipate what impact they may have on us," Carlyle said in its most recent quarterly report, filed on Aug. 14.

Private equity firms such as Carlyle raise money from big investors and then use that money to invest in companies or other investments. The industry is under close scrutiny because of the U.S. presidential election and presumed Republican nominee Mitt Romney's former role as an executive at another private equity firm, Bain Capital.

Kuwait's NIG started out in the 1960s as a building materials company and later began investing across a range of industries.

It is partly backed by the Kharafi clan, one of Kuwait's most prominent merchant families. A branch of the Kuwaiti government, the Public Institution for Social Security, is a minority investor.

Like many Gulf companies, it has struggled to meet its debt obligations in the wake of the financial crisis. Faced with a looming $475 million loan repayment due earlier this month, it approached its lenders about reworking the terms on the debt so it could repay over a longer period.

Just days before the Aug. 16 repayment deadline came due, NIG announced it was calling off the effort to adjust the repayment terms because it had managed to line up new financing.

Ivory Coast ex-president's spokesman arrested

Laurent Gbagbo's spokesman has been arrested in Ghana where he fled after the collapse of the former Ivorian president's regime, relatives and a government source said Saturday.

Justin Kone Katinan was arrested under an August 2011 warrant for alleged economic crimes as budget minister during three months of crisis and conflict that followed Gbagbo's refusal to cede power to his rival Alassane Ouattara in December 2010.

"He was arrested yesterday in Accra by Ghanaian police when he arrived from Johannesburg," a relative told AFP in Abidjan by telephone from Ghana's capital.

"This time it's right," said a source in Ouattara's government, referring to an earlier report of Katinan's arrest that turned out to be unfounded.

The source said that Ivorian officials had been sent to Accra and "he should be back in Abidjan within the day."

But Katinan did not return home. A family member, noting that Katinan's political refugee status has just been renewed, said that he had told his wife that extradition was "out of the question".

The relative said that Katinan was in custody but was "serene" and expected to be freed soon.

However a senior Ghanaian police officer denied knowledge of the arrest.

Gbagbo appointed Katinan his spokesman following his own arrest in April last year and subsequent extradition to stand trial at the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity.

Katinan is the second of Gbagbo's henchmen to be arrested under an international warrant issued by the Ivorian government, after former defence minister Moise Lida Kouassi, who was picked up in Togo on June 6 and extradited the same day.

Katinan is accused of being behind a series of bank robberies to keep Gbagbo's camp in funds.

Thousands of Gbagbo loyalists fled to Ghana after the fall of his regime following the post-election conflict in which some 3,000 people were killed.

Meanwhile, a soldier, a civilian and two assailants were killed in an attack on a military checkpoint near the town of Grand-Lahou, 140 kilometres (85 miles) west of Abidjan.

Defence Minister Paul Koffi Koffi, however, said the incident was not considered part of a recent trend that has seen the army targeted in a string of attacks.

Two other assailants escaped and the civilian was hit by a stray bullet, said the minister. A military source earlier said four assailants and one solider had been killed.

Tension is still high in Ivory Coast in the wake of the series of attacks on the army that the Ouattara government has blamed on Gbagbo supporters.

Some 20 former regime figures have so far been detained and accused of genocide, crimes of violence and other charges.

Former minister Alphonse Douati was arrested in Abidjan on August 18, accused of violating state security.

Though some pro-Outtara forces have also been accused of crimes during the crisis, no one from the president's camp has so far been charged, leading to claims of bias and "victor's justice".

Articles 2.3 Wikipedia reader for iPhone and iPad review

Articles is an Apple Design Award winning Wikipedia reader from Sophiestication Software with one simple, elegant goal in mind -- to present all the information you want in a fast, fluid, feature-rich format. Articles 2.3 takes all of that makes it equally available for iPhone and iPod touch, and iPad. That's right, Articles 2.3 is now a universal app.

But lets back up a minute. If you're new to the idea of Wikipedia Readers, you may be wondering why you need one. Wikipedia is free on the web, right? Why spend even a couple bucks to wrap it in an app. The answer is interface. You can do far more, far more easily, with a native app than you can do with a web page. There's a reason Facebook finally re-did their app with a native interface -- performance and power. And it's the same reason Articles works so wonderfully with Wikipedia. If you prefer the Facebook app to Facebook.com, or a Twitter app to Twitter.com, you'll prefer Articles to Wikipedia.com. It really is that much better.

Everything that made the original Articles great remains in Articles 2.3 -- delightful design, intuitive interface, smart shortcuts, and the same thumbnail switcher for managing multiple pages that Safari enjoys on iPhone and Mac. Searching for titles or text, showing local points of interest on the map, and the random "shake" for serendipitous subjects all remain as useful today and when they were introduced.

New in Articles 2.3, aside from the aforementioned universal app status for the iPad interface, is read later support. Rather than offload to a service like Instapaper, Pocket, or Readability, Articles takes another cue from Safari an incorporates its own reading list into the app. That's both good and bad. It's good in that, if all you use is Articles, you don't have to create an InstaPockAbility account just to save articles. It's bad in that, if you have an existing InstaPockAbility account, especially if you're a power InstaPockAbility user, it's inconvenient not to have all your stuff in that central repository for your unified later reading pleasure.

Speaking of reading pleasure, simply consuming Wikipedia content via Articles continues to be an outstanding experience. Text flows well, pictures are handled smartly, and tapping and holding links brings up all the extra controls you'd expect. You can even pinch to "zoom" -- make the font size smaller or larger. There's no way to change typefaces, but I'm of two minds on this. On one hand, foundries are finally figuring out how to license some truly amazing type to app developers (check out recent versions of Instapaper). On the other hand, absolute consistency of font makes it almost invisible -- it gets completely out of the way so you don't even think about it. You just read the words.

You can also now share a Wikipedia article you're reading via iOS 5 Twitter integration. Just tap the action button, tap Twitter, and up pops a tweet sheet ready for you to add a pithy comment to and post.

And if you're a Launch Center Pro geek, Articles 2.3 also adds support for iOS URL schemes so you can add all sorts of clever queries to your actions.

The good

  • Fast, fluid interface
  • Excellent reading experience
  • Provides features not available via the web
  • Universal app

The bad

  • Doesn't integrate with popular third-party read later services.
  • No font selection

The bottom line

I read Wikipedia. I don't have time to read books (I'm too busy writing) and the current affairs nature of web sites can be exhausting. So, really late at night, when I'm finally finished working for the day, I read Wikipedia. And I read it in Articles.

Wikipedia.com is fine for a quick Google search but it's not a great reading experience, especially on a mobile device. Articles is.

I like that I can pull down to lock orientation without having to stop, pull up the fast app switcher widget, and make a global change. I like that I can quickly go back through just my Wikipedia history to find something in an article I read recently. I like that I can keep multiple pages upon and quickly tab through them, separate from Safari, which would otherwise obliterate them with other sites I visit during the day. I like all the little shortcuts, so carefully and deliberately thought out, that I don't even have to think about any more, just use as second nature.

If you read Wikipedia, you need a Wikipedia reader, and if you need a Wikipedia reader, you need Articles. It was one of the first, and remains one of the best ways to read Wikpedia not only on the iPhone and iPad, but to read it period.

Central bank, Greece uncertainty weighs on investors

LONDON (Reuters) - Investors sold riskier assets across financial markets on Friday, in limbo until they learn how much of a punch central banks will give to the stumbling global economy.

The euro zone's struggle to prevent its own break-up continues to dominate markets and play on economic confidence.

European shares <.ftse>, which have suffered their worst run in over a month in the last few days as euro zone uncertainty has returned, was down 0.2 percent in early afternoon trading pulling MSCI's main global index <.miwd00000pus> down around a third of a percent on the day.

The falls were accelerated by cautious comments from German Chancellor Angela Merkel about Greece and by concerns that the European Central Bank may not launch its new bond-buying-led crisis plan as early as markets have been eyeing.

"We are in a vacuum, policy-wise, ahead of the Jackson Hole meeting and the (European Central Bank) meeting on September 6 so we are in a wait and see mode," said Saxo Bank chief economist Steen Jakobsen.

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke and other central bank leaders meet in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, next week for an annual get-together that often hints at what monetary policy is to come.

"We are waiting to see whether we get QE3 (another round of asset buying from the Fed) and to see how the ECB is going play the promise that it will help the peripherals, so right now the market is just concentrating on technicals."

After falls on Thursday, U.S. stock markets were expected to open slightly higher when trading resumes on Wall Street at 1330 GMT.

Key global stock markets have risen 15-20 percent since June as hopes of a resolution to the euro zone crisis have sustained investor optimism despite a deterioration in company earning outlooks.

But the rises appear to have come to a halt over the last week. The S&P 500 has failed to break through 1425-30 points, while Europe's top shares have been unable to climb above 1115 points.

WILD CARD

The euro fell away from its recent seven-week highs versus the dollar, to stand at a day-low of $1.2505 by 1130 GMT.

Pushing it down were fading hopes of a rapid new euro zone drive to end its crisis as politicians signaled new plans could take another month to put together. The dollar inched up 0.2 percent to 78.60 yen.

"The data calendar is fairly empty so we suspect that trading will be technical in nature today," said KBC economist Piet Lammens, pointing to a meeting in Berlin between Merkel and Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras as the main point of interest for markets.

"Merkel and Samaras is of course always a wild card but we have had so many indications that the Greek issue will be put back to the end of September," Lammens said.

Following the meeting, Samaras said he was convinced an upcoming report by Greece's trio of international lenders would show the government can get quick results with its new debt cutting plans.

Comments from Merkel that Germany and France wanted Greece to stay in the euro provided little comfort for markets looking for more concrete action and helped accelerate the euro's drop.

Triple A-rated German government bonds, traditionally favored by risk-adverse investors, have rebounded sharply in recent days, tracking the rise in U.S. Treasuries and helped by a return of uncertainty among investors about the euro zone's progress out of its debt crisis.

Bund futures were up 46 ticks at 143.96 as they continued to bulldoze higher, while Spanish Italian and Portuguese bonds saw falls ranging between 0.1 and 0.8 percent.

MESS

Oil prices, which have been trading in a tight range this week, slipped below $115 per barrel but remained on track for their fourth weekly gain. "It's no secret that the global economy is in bad shape," said Tony Nunan, a risk manager at Mitsubishi Corp in Tokyo.

"Europe's a mess, the U.S. is struggling and China, which was seen as a growth engine, is also sputtering -- all of which points to weak demand for crude."

Metal prices remained supported by expectations of central bank support and unrest in producer countries. Spot gold dipped on Friday but has risen more than 3 percent this week after Federal Reserve minutes showed the bank is likely to deliver another dose of stimulus "fairly soon".

With data from the world's biggest economy coming out mixed so far this week, durable goods data was set to be one of focuses of U.S. trading.

Investors were also watching Spain again on Friday, after three euro zone sources told Reuters that Madrid is negotiating with European partners over conditions for aid to bring down its borrowing costs, though the country has not made a final decision to request a bailout.

Madrid's IBEX <.ibex> had jumped nearly 30 percent since comments by European Central Bank head Mario Draghi in late July sparked expectations of fresh measures to help lower the borrowing costs of Spain and Italy. But it has lost 4.7 percent since a peak hit on Monday, although charts show the index has managed to keep its four-week upward channel intact.

"Pullback would be welcomed by many money managers who failed to take part in the recent move and at some stage will need to tell clients of the underperformance," IG Markets strategist Stan Shamu wrote in a note.
