At Ant Eater Exterminating, we will keep your home pest free through a variety of services.

The type of service required depends upon the kind and extent of infestation, the degree to which you are comfortable with the occasional bug in your home an what level of invasive pest removal you are comfortable with.

Sometimes a one-time pest control treatment is all that's required to take care of an infestation. Cases like removal of spider webs or spraying of a home's foundation for ants are examples of a one-time treatment. Other times, multiple treatments may be require to fully rid a home of pests and ensure that they are not welcome to return.

A good first line of defense when it comes to pest control is to treat the exterior of the home. This can make the perimeter of your home inhospitable to pests. Sometimes, however, the pests have already penetrated the home's interior. In those cases, treating the inside of the home may be necessary. It's a good idea to be aggressive in these cases, because most pests will lay eggs in the home, eggs that will hatch very quickly. It's easy to see how a pest problem could increase exponentially very quickly!

World's largest release of comprehensive human cancer genome data helps speed discoveries

World's largest release of comprehensive human cancer genome data helps speed discoveries

Tuesday, May 29, 2012

To speed progress against cancer and other diseases, the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital ? Washington University Pediatric Cancer Genome Project today announced the largest-ever release of comprehensive human cancer genome data for free access by the global scientific community. The amount of information released more than doubles the volume of high-coverage, whole genome data currently available from all human genome sources combined. This information is valuable not just to cancer researchers, but also to scientists studying almost any disease.

The release of this data was announced as a part of a perspective published in Nature Genetics online May 29.

The 520 genome sequences released today are matched sets of normal and tumor tissue samples from 260 pediatric cancer patients. The Pediatric Cancer Genome Project is expected to sequence more than 1,200 genomes by year's end. Each sample is sequenced at a quality control level known as 30-fold coverage, ensuring maximum accuracy. St. Jude researchers are analyzing the genomic sequences to determine the differences between each child's normal and cancerous cells to pinpoint the causes of more than a half-dozen of the most deadly childhood cancers, an effort which has already produced a number of key discoveries reported in top scientific journals.

"This effort has generated more discoveries than we thought possible," said James Downing, M.D., St. Jude scientific director who leads the project at St. Jude. "We want to make this information available to the broader scientific community so that, collectively, we can explore new treatment options for these children. By sharing the information even before we analyze it ourselves, we're hoping that other researchers can use this rich resource for insights into many other types of diseases in children and adults."

Launched in early 2010, the Pediatric Cancer Genome Project is the world's largest effort and investment to date to understand the genetic origins of childhood cancers. The three-year project will cost an estimated $65 million. St. Jude is covering $55 million of the cost, including a $20 million commitment from Kay Jewelers, a long-standing partner of St. Jude. This is the first major privately funded human genome sequencing project to share its data as soon as it becomes available. To date, this type of open access has largely been restricted to government-funded efforts. Non-government efforts are typically treated as proprietary.

"Setting this precedent reflects a commitment to freely sharing information that has been a hallmark of St. Jude since we opened our doors 50 years ago," said Dr. William Evans, St. Jude director and CEO. "The Pediatric Cancer Genome Project is a one-of-a-kind effort, so the information has the potential to accelerate disease research worldwide."

Researchers worldwide will be able to access the sequence data via the Web-based European Genome-Phenome Archive, which provides large datasets for free access by researchers on request: www.ebi.ac.uk/ega/organisations/EGAO00000000046.

While most cancer genome initiatives focus only on genes, which make up a small portion of the genome, the Pediatric Cancer Genome Project researchers have taken a different approach. They are sequencing the entire genome ? all the DNA ? in each patient's tumor. This provides a richer, more complete picture of the DNA changes underlying the development and progression of each patient's disease.

"This approach has been more valuable that anyone could have predicted," says Richard K. Wilson, Ph.D., director of The Genome Institute at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. "We have identified unusual, 'cryptic' changes in many patients' cancer cells that we would not have found using other methods. We are pleased to be able to share this data with the research community in hopes that others can build upon our initial discoveries."

The Pediatric Cancer Genome Project has already yielded significant insights into aggressive childhood cancers of the retina, brainstem and blood published in leading international scientific journals. Project researchers working on the eye tumor retinoblastoma discovered clues to the tumor's rapid development that enabled them identify a promising new anti-cancer agent. Investigators studying a deadly childhood leukemia known as early T-precursor acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ETP-ALL) found unexpected genetic alterations that could change diagnosis and treatment for patients with this disease. Efforts to understand the genetic changes underlying a brainstem tumor called diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG) found that a startling 78 percent of the tumors carried changes in two genes not previously tied to cancer. Most recently, project researchers identified a gene mutation associated with a chronic and often fatal form of neuroblastoma?a discovery that provides the first clue about the genetic basis of the long-recognized but poorly understood link between treatment outcome and age at diagnosis.

"These findings would not have been possible without the Pediatric Cancer Genome Project," said Downing. He said these results offer new strategies for finding and treating these high-risk cancers. The project has also demonstrated the marked differences between pediatric and adult cancers, underscoring the importance of developing therapies specifically for childhood cancers.

Copper-nickel nanowires could be perfect fit for printable electronics

ScienceDaily (May 29, 2012) ? While the Statue of Liberty and old pennies may continue to turn green, printed electronics and media screens made of copper nanowires will always keep their original color.

Duke University chemists created a new set of flexible, electrically conductive nanowires from thin strands of copper atoms mixed with nickel. The copper-nickel nanowires, in the form of a film, conduct electricity even under conditions that break down the transfer of electrons in plain silver and copper nanowires, a new study shows.

Because films made with copper-nickel nanowires are stable and are relatively inexpensive to create, they are an attractive option to use in printed electronics, products like electronic paper, smart packaging and interactive clothing, said Benjamin Wiley, an assistant professor of chemistry at Duke. His team describes the new nanowires in a NanoLetters paper published online May 29.

The new copper-nickel nanowires are the latest nanomaterial Wiley's lab has developed as a possible low-cost alternative to indium tin oxide, or ITO. This material is coated on glass to form the transparent conductive layer in the display screens of cell phones, e-readers and iPads.

Indium, at $600 -- $800 per kilogram, is an expensive rare-earth element. Most of it is mined and exported from China, which is reducing exports, causing indium's price to increase. Indium tin oxide is deposited as a vapor in a relatively slow, expensive coating process, adding to its cost. And the film is brittle, which is a major reason the signature pads at grocery store checkout lines eventually fail and why there is not yet a flexible, rollable iPad.

Last year, Wiley's lab created copper nanowire films that can be deposited from a liquid in a fast, inexpensive coating process. These conductive films are much more flexible than the current ITO film. Copper is also one-thousand times more abundant and one-hundred times cheaper than indium. One problem with copper nanowire films, however, is that they have an orange tint that would not be desirable in a display screen. The copper-based films also oxidize gradually when exposed to air, suffering from the same chemical reaction that turns the Statue of Liberty or an old penny green, Wiley said.

Nickels, however, rarely turn green. Inspired by the U.S. five-cent piece, Wiley wondered if he could prevent oxidation of the copper nanowires by adding nickel. He and his graduate student, Aaron Rathmell, developed a method of mixing nickel into the copper nanowires by heating them in a nickel salt solution.

"Within a few minutes, the nanowires become much more grey in color," Wiley said.

Rathmell and Wiley then baked the new nanowires at various temperatures to test how long they conducted electricity and resisted oxidation. The tests show that the copper-nickel nanowire films would have to sit in air at room temperature for 400 years before losing 50 percent of their electrical conductivity. Silver nanowires would lose half of their conductivity in 36 months under the same conditions. Plain copper nanowires would last only 3 months.

While the copper-nickel nanowires stack up against silver and copper alone, they aren't going to replace indium-tin-oxide in flat-panel displays any time soon, Wiley said, explaining that, for films with similar transparency, copper-nickel nanowire films cannot yet conduct the same amount of electricity as ITO. "Instead, we're currently focusing on applications where ITO can't go, like printed electronics," he said.

The greater stability of copper-nickel nanowires makes them a better alternative to both copper and silver for applications that require a stable level of electrical conductivity for more than a few years, which is important for certain printed electronics applications, Wiley said.

He explained that printed electronics combine conductive or electronically active inks with the printing processes that make magazines, consumer packaging and clothing designs. The low cost and high speed of these printing processes make them attractive for the production of solar cells, LEDs, plastic packaging and clothing.

A Durham, NC startup company, NanoForge Corp., which Wiley co-founded has begun manufacturing copper-nickel nanowires to test in these and other potential applications.

Food, Wine, Love and Friendship --San Francisco Style: Pasta Moon ...

STAYCATION: 05.18.2012 @ 8:30 PM

AS SEEN ON CHECK, PLEASE! BAY AREA: http://www.youtube.com...

The lounge was sleek and sexy.
The food and drink were tasty.
The jazz guitarist got my juices flowing...........

AMBIANCE/DECOR:
Pasta Moon is a good place to have a nice dinner in Half Moon Bay. The outside looked like a very??casual?eatery with a couple of patio tables. The menu was written on a blackboard.

Upon walking in at around 8:30 PM, we were greeted by the tantaliziing jazz music being played by the guitarist on the stage. We were offered to be seated at the main dining area but we opted for the lounge that was modern and sexy. It was spacious with high ceilings with exposed slat beams.

The mood lighting of hanging red/yellow glass lights were turned down. Low lounge chairs made of red leather along with eclectic dining tables were available for seating.

FOOD AND DRINK: (Sorry, no food pics. Too dark for the camera!)
ITALIAN 77 $10:?? St.Germain Elderflower Liquor, Fresh Lemon Juice, Prosecco?
* Citrusy bubbly. Refreshing. However,?it tasted more like?champagne with lemon juice. Just okay.

BRUSCHETTA $10: Burrata cheese served over local greens and sun dried tomato pesto
* 2 Bruchetta piled high with greens and sun dried tomatoes. Good and filling!

TAGLAITELLE PRAWNS $ 22 : Spring Asparagus, lemon, parmesan, basil, garlic, EVOO
* Good but nothing remarkable. It tastes like the the bowl of pasta that I make at home when I want something simple and comforting. The pasta was chewy but slighty dry. The plump prawns were fresh and generous.

PASTA MOON LASAGNA : $12/$19 House made Sicilian sausage, ricotta, parmesan, chili flake, tomato sauce
*?Enrique got the full order. Sadly, he got food poisoning at San Benito Bar earlier in the afternoon. He barely touched his lasagna. I tasted it to compare it to my lasagna and it was actually pretty good! This lasagna is Pasta Moon's signature dish.

VERDICT:
Pasta Moon is a solid dining venue in Half Moon Bay. It is about to celebrate its 25th anniversary this coming June 2012. It's farm to table philosophy making use of the local, sustainable produce is just one of the good reasons why this 25 year old restaurant should be patronized. The rest is the house made pasta and lovely ambiance.

TOTAL: $90 including tip, 1 alc and 2 non-acl drinks

NOTEWORTHY:
1. Sexy lounge area.
2. Check out Pasta Moon's Live Music Calendar for free, no cover music until 9PM.
3. Definitely order the Pasta Moon Lasagna!

Shadow of the Colossus movie in development with Sony Pictures

Home ? Featured, News

Shadow of the Colossus is Comming to Europe 2 Shadow of the Colossus movie in development with Sony PicturesSony Pictures and Josh Trank, director of sleeper-hit Chronicle, have teamed up to make a live-action adaptation of the classic Shadow of the Colossus.

Writers are currently being interviewed to help create what will hopefully be a true-to-source video game movie.

Movies based on videogames have had quite a bad reputation amongst gamers but will Shadow of the Colossus break this trend and be universally liked?

For those of you who haven?t played the game or have even heard of it, the story is about a young man named Wander who sets out on a journey to slay 16 giant Colossi so that he is able revive a girl named Mono.

Josh Trank has claimed to have been a massive fan of the game when it saw a release back in 2005 and so sought out the job to direct the movie so hopefully the fate of it is in good hands!

There has been no word on casting, an expected release date or when filming may begin but Kevin Misher, producer of big hits The Interpreter and Public Enemies, has signed on to produce the movie.

1 in 5 Americans Will Get Skin Cancer. Here's How To Protect Yourself

By Chai Woodham, for U.S. News

You know you've reached the zenith of pop culture zaniness when Saturday Night Live parodies you. That's exactly what happened to Patricia Krentcil, the overly bronzed New Jersey mom facing second-degree child endangerment charges for allegedly allowing her then five-year-old daughter into a tanning booth. Audiences across America may have laughed at an Oompa-Loompa orange Kristin Wiig spoofing the infamous "Tanning Mom," but doctors say that this is no laughing matter.

A new study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Cancer Institute (NCI) reveals that 50 percent of young adults ages 18 through 29 say they've had at least one sunburn in the past year. "A sunburn is a form of sickness or poisoning," says Cynthia Bailey, a dermatologist practicing in Sebastopol, Calif. "Both a sunburn and a suntan indicate that ultraviolet rays have caused free radicals to form within the skin and DNA damage has occurred." And this, in turn, can lead to skin cancer, the most common form of cancer in the United States.

Sun seekers aren't the only ones putting themselves at risk. The American Academy of Dermatology estimates that some 28 million Americans tan indoors each year, and the age of frequent users is getting younger and younger. A study also conducted by the CDC and NCI found that nearly a third of white women ages 18 to 21 regularly use tanning beds, averaging about 28 visits in 2010. "Ultraviolet radiation from tanning devices [and the sun] is just as carcinogenic to humans as tobacco smoking," says Delphine Lee, a dermatologist and director of translational immunology at the John Wayne Cancer Institute in Santa Monica, Calif. "Studies found a 75 percent increase in the risk of melanoma in those who had been exposed to UV radiation from indoor tanning before the age of 35."

Mention melanoma, the most deadly form of skin cancer, and John McCain might come to mind -- the 75-year-old senator who has endured numerous removals of melanoma from his upper body and face. Recent studies, though, show that it's not an older person's disease. Rather than the likes of McCain, people should really remember reggae musician Bob Marley, who died at age 36 from a metastatic melanoma found on his toe. A Mayo Clinic survey of patients published in April revealed that for people under 40, incidences of melanoma have increased eightfold among women and fourfold among men from 1979 to 2009. This rise in cases may be due to the popularity of indoor tanning, researchers speculate. "Fifteen to 30 minutes in a tanning booth is equal to an entire day at the beach, and the UV [rays] absorbed during a session is 20 times stronger than the rays of the sun," says Howard Murad, a dermatologist and associate clinical professor of medicine at the University of California--Los Angeles.

So why do people keep tanning? Surely the thought of thinning skin, fine lines and wrinkles, liver spots, skin rashes from the interaction between UV rays and certain medications, aggravation of autoimmune diseases, and cataracts -- not to mention cancers of the eye and skin -- would deter most folks. New research published in the May issue of Addiction Biology suggests that for some people, tanning is not that easy to resist.

Scientists measured the brain activity and blood flow of study participants subjected to ultraviolet radiation in a tanning bed. What they discovered was that the UV rays stimulated several parts of the brain involved in addiction. Quite simply, tanning could be just as habit-forming as drugs or alcohol. Despite all the awareness of the health hazards of tanning, it appears that some people just can't say no when they should.

The Skin Cancer Foundation reports that more than two million people are diagnosed with skin cancer each year, and one person dies from melanoma every hour. "It would be unrealistic to expect the average person not to get some color by the end of the summer," says Lawrence Mark, a dermatologist at the Indiana University Simon Cancer Center in Indianapolis. "But there is always some risk with tanning. The question is whether the benefit is worth the risk."

To minimize that risk, here's what you can do:

Slather on sunscreen. "I often tell my patients to use an SPF 30 and to reapply their sunscreen every two hours," says Erin Gilbert, a dermatologist and spokesperson for the American Academy of Dermatology. Some products boast a sun protection factor as high as 80. That isn't necessary, says Gilbert, as there is no good evidence that an SPF higher than 30 provides greater protection. What you really need to do, she advises, is "apply a shot glass worth of sunscreen daily to exposed areas like the face, neck, hands, and chest to achieve adequate coverage." Applying too thinly lowers the protection factor of the product.

With the wide array of sun protection products on shelves today, the Food and Drug Administration is implementing new regulations to help consumers determine the best sunscreen for them. Prior standards only addressed protection against UVB rays -- UVB-shielding products just help protect against sunburns. Starting in December, manufacturers will be required to label those sunscreens that protect against both UVB and UVA rays as "broad spectrum." Those that carry the "broad spectrum" designation and have an SPF 15 or higher will show wording indicating they reduce the risk of sunburn, skin cancer, and premature aging with proper sun protection behaviors like limited sun exposure and use of protective clothing. Those that are not labeled "broad spectrum" or that have an SPF value between 2 and 14 only prevent sunburn and will carry a "skin cancer/skin aging alert." Other changes include the rule that manufacturers will no longer be able to call their product a "sunblock" or describe their sunscreen as "sweatproof" or "waterproof." And those sunscreens with an SPF value higher than 50 will simply be labeled as "SPF 50+."

Cover up. Put on a wide-brimmed hat to protect your face and resist the urge to expose too much skin. Yes, the bikini beckons and hemlines hike up when the temperature rises, but you'll be thankful years from now when people mistake you and your smooth skin for someone much younger. Buy sunglasses that offer both UVA and UVB protection. Ocular melanoma, or cancer of the eye, is diagnosed in about 2,500 Americans every year.

Seek some shade. Avoid the outdoors between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. if possible, as UVA and UVB rays are most intense with the midday sun.

Go bronze from a bottle. "Bronzers are temporary self-tanning products containing pigments or dyes that provide instant color. They can be easily removed with soap and water," says Ron Robinson, a cosmetic chemist and research executive who has developed products for companies like Clinique, Avon, and Revlon. "The main ingredient in self-tanners is dihydroxyacetone, a sugar molecule that reacts with the proteins in the skin to give the skin a tanned color that develops in a few hours." And while "bronzers and self-action tanners are safe and effective," says Tina Alster, a clinical professor of dermatology at Georgetown University Medical Center, it should be noted that they do not provide any sun protection and sunscreen is advised.

Be like Bugs Bunny. Studies show that you can get that golden glow from the food you eat. "Beta carotene is a form of vitamin A that has a yellow or orange pigment and is found in certain fruits and vegetables like carrots, winter squash, and cantaloupe," says Bailey. Eating a diet rich in beta carotene imparts a golden hue to the skin. "It's entirely non-toxic and looks good."

Some doctors say a little exposure to the sun is essential when it comes to vitamin D, also known as the "sunshine vitamin." Research has shown that a deficiency in vitamin D may increase the risk of some cancers, heart disease, multiple sclerosis, osteoporosis, tuberculosis, and the flu. The body produces vitamin D from cholesterol through a process activated by sunlight on the skin. Although this is the most efficient way to produce the vitamin, many dermatologists would rather you eat foods rich in vitamin D -- such as fatty fish like tuna and salmon and fortified foods like dairy products and breakfast cereals -- or take supplements instead of basking in the sun. The Institute of Medicine recommends a daily dose of 600 IU for most people under 70. "The amount of sun needed for adequate amounts of vitamin D causes suntans and sunburns," says Lawrence Samuels, chief of dermatology at St. Luke's Hospital in Chesterfield, Mo. "People die from melanoma and metastatic skin cancer. No one dies from vitamin D supplements."

GOP Texas primary fight: Desperate Dewhurst slimes conservative challenger Ted Cruz

I told you about conservative GOP Senate candidate Ted Cruz in my Tea Party revolt endorsements column in February. His momentum has increased exponentially in the lead-up to next Tuesday?s primary election. Naturally, the establishment candidate David Dewhurst has taken to sliming Cruz and falsely characterizing his immigration enforcement record.

Twitchy has the story here.

Ben Howe delivers a powerful counterpunch against Desperate Dewhurst?s amnesty lies:

I?ll repeat what I said in February:

In Texas, young attorney Ted Cruz is making waves in the GOP race to replace retiring GOP Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison. The former Texas solicitor general is a 10th Amendment scholar who doesn?t just speak the tea party?s language. Cruz has put constitutional conservatism into action, winning many of the 40 cases he has argued in front of the Supreme Court. Cruz isn?t afraid to challenge the GOP establishment. In 2008, he successfully battled the Bush administration and meddling globalists all the way to the high court to prevent international law from superseding American sovereignty.

The GOP needs just four seats to take control of the Senate. With inspired and inspiring free-market candidates like Dan Liljenquist, Richard Mourdock and Ted Cruz, 2012 bodes well for the tea party footprint on Capitol Hill. Remember: Entrenched incumbency is the disease. Fresh blood is the cure.

Spread the word. Ted Cruz?s campaign website is here. Help any way you can.

Greek pro-bailout conservatives regain lead: polls

ATHENS (Reuters) - Greece's conservative New Democracy party has regained an opinion poll lead that would allow the formation of a pro-bailout government committed to keeping the country in the euro zone, a batch of new surveys showed on Saturday.

Greece was forced to call repeat elections for June 17 after a May 6 vote left parliament divided evenly between groups of parties that support and oppose the austerity conditions attached to a 130 billion euro bailout agreed with the European Union and International Monetary Fund in March.

Polls up to Saturday had showed pro- and anti-bailout parties running neck-and-neck ahead of the vote, which could determine the country's future in the single currency.

Five polls published in the weekend press showed New Democracy, which supports the bailout, with a lead of between 0.5 and 5.7 points over the anti-bailout leftist SYRIZA party - though analysts said the race was still too close to call.

SYRIZA has said it would ditch the country's bailout deal that has led to record unemployment and severe wage cuts.

But Germany and other lenders have said they would cut the country's funding if it took such a step. That would lead to bankruptcy and possibly force Greece to leave the euro.

New Democracy would get between 25.6 percent and 27.7 percent of the vote if the election was held today, according to the polls by Eleftheros Typos/Pulse, Proto Thema/Alco, Real News/MRB, To Vima/Kapa and Ethnos/MARC. SYRIZA's support was between 20.1 and 26 percent.

According to the Pulse and MARC polls, New Democracy and the next-biggest pro-bailout party, the socialist PASOK, would together win a parliamentary majority of between 11 and 16 seats in the country's 300-seat parliament.

"NO BAILOUT, NO FUEL"

The new figures came after conservative leader Antonis Samaras launched a scathing attack on SYRIZA, accusing his rival of flirting with disaster by promising voters Greece could ditch the bailout without risking an exit from the euro.

"If Greece unilaterally rejects the bailout deal it will be isolated for years ... It will have no food, no drugs, no fuel. It will have to live with permanent power cuts," Samaras told party faithful in a rally.

Responding to Samaras, SYRIZA reiterated its opposition to the bailout. "It (the bailout) would mean new wage and pension cuts, new public sector firings, soaring unemployment and shuttered shops," the party said in a statement.

SYRIZA says it wants Greece to keep the euro but drop the austerity policies associated with the country's bailout - a position shared by most Greeks according to one of the polls.

Sixty-five percent of respondents in the Ethnos/MARC survey said that the country should "negotiate hard" to revise the bailout's terms, while 54 percent believed that there was no way Athens could leave the euro. A total of 82 percent said the country should keep the single currency.

But a string of international officials kept up the pressure on Athens on Saturday, saying patience was running out.

"We're not willing to pour money into a bottomless pit," German Interior Minister Hans-Peter Friedrich told newspaper Leipziger Volkszeitung.

IMF chief Christine Lagarde said Greeks had to take responsibility for their fate. "I think they should help themselves collectively ... by all paying their tax," she was quoted as saying in an interview with Britain's Guardian newspaper.

Switzerland urged the euro zone to deal with its problems. Economy Minister Johann Schneider-Amman said in an interview Bern has set up a working group to consider how to support the economy in the case of an escalation of the euro zone crisis.

FRAGILE LEAD

Greek election rules give the party that comes first an automatic bonus of 50 seats in the 300-seat parliament, so even a slim advantage could play a decisive role in determining which party forms the next government.

Analysts said New Democracy's lead was precarious. "These polls show that people got scared from SYRIZA's lead in previous surveys," said political analyst John Loulis.

"This is still a very tight race. New Democracy has a small advantage but whoever called them favorites would be dead wrong," he added.

SYRIZA, led by its charismatic 37-year old leader Alexis Tsipras, is doing particularly well among the young who are particularly hit by unemployment, pollster Pulse said.

New Democracy, by contrast, had a big lead among the over-60s, Pulse said.

Polls since the May 6 election have shown SYRIZA, New Democracy and PASOK improving their performance at the expense of fringe parties. The share of undecided voters is also steadily declining. (http://link.reuters.com/ket38s).

In a bid to woo anti-bailout voters, conservative leader Samaras said on Saturday Greece should be given more time to comply with a bailout term to generate about 11.5 billion euros in savings over the next two years. "All new spending cuts ... should take place over four years, not two," he was quoted as saying by Real News.

Greece's bailout deal allows for a possible relaxation of the country's bailout targets if the country's recession turns even deeper than expected. PASOK leader Evangelos Venizelos has also called for country's fiscal adjustment to be stretched over a longer period to soften the recession.

Greece's new government will have to act fast. Without new bailout funds, Athens may run out of cash by end of June, newspaper To Vima said, citing a memo compiled by former Prime Minister Lucas Papademos on May 11.

"From June 20, the government's available cash will cross negative territory to the tune of 1 billion euros," the document said, confirming earlier reports by finance ministry officials that Greece might run out cash by the end of June.

More Korean Ultra-Nationalism: Dokdo Wine in California / Territorial Dispute Propaganda Ad Appears at Sydney Airport

The Christian Science Monitor reports on yet another episode in the ongoing tale of Korean ultra-nationalists who want the rest of the world to care about the Liancourt Rocks (Takeshima/Dokdo) :

?The latest ploy: a Napa Valley wine produced by Korean-American dentist Ahn Jae-hyun at his Dokdo Winery that uses the island post code as its moniker.

Illustrating the fervor with which such attempts to garner attention for Korea?s sovereign claims over the outcrop, when the wine debuted on the Korean market the local distributor pledged to donate all proceeds to nonprofit groups promoting Korean sovereign claims in other countries.?

Meanwhile, in Australia, Sydney International Airport has suspended a Korean ultra-nationalist ad campaign after receiving a complaint from the local Japanese consulate. The campaign was displaying large images of the Liancourt Rocks declaring them to be Korean territory in the ?East Sea.? To the uninformed, it might look like a normal tourism ad. Airport authorities probably accepted the ad campaign without realizing that it was actually the work of anti-Japanese organizations that are obsessed with territorial disputes.

Cat Care The Easy Way | pets world

When we feel pain in our bodies, we can easily tell someone that there is something wrong and that person will be able to take you to the infirmary. Pets cannot do that merely observing them can tell you a lot of things. which is why owners should employ cat care and be aware of the symptoms.

Here are a few diseases you should watch out for and their symptoms.

Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is the most feared disease by cat owners. It is a acknowledged fact, that it is the leading cause of death amongst cats. It is caused by a coronavirus infection and what is yet worse, is that the symptoms are very much like other diseases so it is really hard to diagnose.

There is also Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) that is similar to HIV (human immunodeficiency virus). Just like the version in humans, it is a life long infection that progresses slowly and kills the cat.

Cats may also be infected by Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV). This is a is a retrovirus that causes fatal cancerous and non cancerous diseases. As Luck Would Have It, it can be easily treated by using some household bleach and detergents, also your pet must be kept warm. This disease is transferred through the saliva, tears, urine and feces of other cats that are infected. unlike the other two diseases, it is unable to live that long in the environment. Hence, it is only transmittable when the infected cat stays with another cat for any period of time.

Worms are also another threat to cats and this is caused by a fungal infection that is spread through spores. Since it is a self-limiting disease, you do not need to do anything to make it go away. It will in time clear up but it may just take a few months.

If your cat is obese, the chances are it already has feline diabetes. The symptoms of this disease include excessive urination and thirst as well as weight loss or gain. Veterinarians are not yet certain what causes this, but there have been a few research studies that have showed that there is a link between pancreatic disease, hormonal imbalance and particular medications.

The symptoms of most of the diseases mentioned are very similar. These include diarrhea, vomiting, lameness lasting for more than five days in one leg, a reduction in sight, excessive panting, a seizure, blood in the stool or urine, hair loss, persistent coughing or gagging and breathing heavily or rapidly at rest. In order to find the answer, your cat will have to undergo some tests.

Your veterinarian will take some blood, urine and feces samples and ask for input from you, about any observation you have made. When the tests results come back, only then will the proper treatment be administered to your cat as each case is different, so what worked for another cat may not have the identical positive effect with yours.

Your cat will always be healthy if you give it constant attention. This is done by giving it leading quality natural food, giving it fresh water daily, allowing it to exercise, proper grooming, making sure it stays indoors and taking it for frequent visits to your veterinary surgeon.

If you miss any of these simple steps, then something wrong is certain to happen to your cat and you will soon notice a change in the behavior of your cat and if you do nothing about it, it is just going to make matters far worse. So you require to observe proper cat care and watch out for any symptoms.

Bounty scandal, player safety to be addressed at NFL Owners' meeting

wwltv.com

Posted on May 22, 2012 at 11:28 AM

By BARRY WILNER /? AP Pro Football Writer

?? With the Saints bounty case moving to grievance hearings and court, NFL owners will talk about player safety when they meet on Tuesday.
?
?? The issue is on the agenda for the owners' session in Atlanta, where Commissioner Roger Goodell is certain to be asked about Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma's defamation lawsuit against him. Meanwhile, Goodell's authority for administering discipline is being challenged by the players' union, Vilma and three other players suspended for their roles in the pay-for-hits system.
?
?? That's the hot topic, but hardly the only topic. Owners also will discuss several bylaw changes that were tabled in March, including designating one player suffering a major injury before Week 2 of the season as eligible to return from injured reserve, and moving the trading deadline back two weeks to after Week 8.
?
?? Atlanta Falcons President Rich McKay, chairman of the competition committee, expects both measures to pass.
?
?? "There were good ideas and suggestions, no resistance," he said at the last meetings. "We'll work on the language."
?
?? The language from the players punished in the bounty case has been strong and challenging of the league's findings. Vilma's lawsuit claims Goodell made false statements that tarnished the linebacker's reputation and hindered his ability to earn a living playing football. Vilma has been suspended for the 2012 season.
?
?? The suit in U.S. District Court in New Orleans claims Goodell, "relied on, at best, hearsay, circumstantial evidence and lies" in making comments about Vilma while discussing the NFL's bounty investigation.
?
?? The union filed a grievance with an arbitrator asserting that Goodell has no power to discipline players for actions that occurred before the league's current labor agreement was signed last August.
?
?? Vilma and current Saints teammate defensive end Will Smith, plus former Saints Anthony Hargrove, a defensive end now with Green Bay, and Scott Fujita, a linebacker now with Cleveland, have appealed their suspensions. Smith got four games, Hargrove eight and Fujita three.
?
?? Their appeal asks another arbitrator to decide if the players should be punished for the system that the league says ran for three years and paid improper cash bonuses for hits that injured targeted opponents. The union argues that the arbitrator, Stephen Burbank, and not Goodell should hear the four players' appeals.
?
?? On other issues, the NFL has informally looked at further changes to kickoff returns, considered the most dangerous play in football. It already has altered the defenseless player rules to include offensive and defensive players, and there even have been suggestions about eliminating the three-point stance for line play.
?
?? Equipment issues also could be discussed at these meetings, with a close eye on concussions. Dozens of lawsuits have been filed against the league by former players and their families claiming the league didn't warn them about the long-term effects of head trauma.
?
?? The players are opposed to mandatory use of hip, thigh and knee pads, something the owners are considering for the 2013 season. As it has done in the Saints case, the union could file a grievance, claiming such changes should be bargained, not unilaterally imposed by the league.

25 Babies Possibly Exposed to TB | Health and Fitness

Two hospitals in Sacramento and Solano County, California, have reached out to parents of 25 babies who many have been exposed to tuberculosis in the hospitals? neonatal intensive care units.

Health officials said the newborns could have been exposed when a person with active tuberculosis visited the neonatal intensive care units of the two hospitals.

The person, whose name has not been made public, visited the neonatal intensive care unit at Sacramento?s Sutter Memorial Hospital between the middle and end of March, health officials determined.

The Sacramento County public health department determined 11 babies from that hospital are at risk, a spokesperson for the health department told ABC News.

The same individual visited the neonatal intensive care unit of NorthBay Medical Center in Fairfield between the end of March and mid-April where 15 babies may have been put at risk, officials said.

The Solano public health department confirmed the families of 14 of the babies have been contacted for further tests. The two hospitals said some have already undergone testing. They would not release more information about the families who were contacted.

?We will take the necessary measures to ensure that all those with significant levels of exposure are tested and, if necessary, treated with antibiotics,? said Dr. Michael Stacey, chief medical officer of the Solano County Public Health Department.

Tuberculosis is a potentially dangerous infectious disease spread by microscopic germ droplets travelling through the air. Coughing, sneezing, talking in the vicinity of others, or singing to a baby can be enough to spread the germs. The disease causes bacteria slowly to grow in the lungs.

Infants and children are among the most vulnerable groups if they contract tuberculosis.

?It?s extremely rare that there will be transmission to the babies who are in a neonatal intensive care unit,? said Dr. Jeffrey Starke, director of the children?s tuberculosis clinic at Texas Children?s Hospital, who has investigated more than 30 hospital exposures of tuberculosis.

Neonatal units are designed to be more sterile environments with more air circulation, said Starke. Many babies are intubated ? given breathing tubes ? which also gives them an added layer of protection, he said.

Since it is harder to detect the bacterial infection in babies, public health officials, during investigations of hospital tuberculosis exposures, will test hospital administrators and staff who may have been exposed to see whether the babies may be at risk.

?The hospital staff is indicators of whether there?s a problem of infection spread,? said Starke. ?If anybody got infected during that time, then their blood test or TB test now should be active.?

Both hospitals are compiling a list of employees and contacting those who may have been in the area at the time of exposure, said Stacey.

More than 11,000 cases of tuberculosis were reported in the U.S. in 2010, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The individual who caused the exposure has been identified and is currently isolated and in treatment, said Stacey. Officials would not provide more information about the person, including the gender.

?The person did not know that they had active TB at the time, nor did the hospitals know,? said Stacey.

Tuberculosis is highly treatable if caught early in infants and children. Test results of the individual?s tuberculosis showed that the strain is not resistant to any of the medications available to treat the infection, said Stacey.

Exposure doesn?t necessarily mean the babies, or even children or adults in the area will contract the illness.

In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Thursday, Apple said it had instituted a new policy whereby employees?will be eligible to collect a quarterly?dividend on shares of restricted stock. Cook's dividends would be worth approximately $75 million per quarter, Reuters reports. But Cook, who received just shy of $400 million in compensation last year, is requesting that he not receive the dividends on the restricted stock.?

Neither Cook nor Apple publicly gave a reason for the move. So hey, why did Cook walk away from such a big pay day?

Well, over at All Things D,?John Paczkowski chalks it up to "classiness." It's a "remarkable" gesture "in an era when entitlement, greed and arrogance are so often part of the job description," Paczkowski writes.?"Which is not to say that he?s not reaping some benefits here. There?s a lot of mileage for Apple in a symbolic gesture like this, and Cook profits when Apple?s overall value increases."

Since taking over as CEO of Apple in 2011, Cook has assembled an impressive track record.?

Cook is the top-rated chief executive in the country,?according to an recent survey from Glassdoor.?"Employees appear to think that Cook has managed to keep Apple?s core corporate culture intact," writes?Hayley Tsukayama of the Washington Post.?"And he?s certainly been able to keep the company?s momentum going ? though the launch of the iPhone 4S and the third generation of the iPad ? feats that Apple is happy to reward."?

Not that there haven't been a few hurdles. Among them: a recent New York Times report alleging that employees at Foxconn, which builds iPhone and iPad parts for Apple, were underpaid and overworked. In March, Cook dropped in at a Foxconn plant in China.?It was a kind of repeat trip: In 2010, in the wake of a series of high-profile suicides, Cook, then the COO, reportedly traveled to China to investigate working conditions at several Foxconn factories.?

Next up for Apple? A new iPhone, probably. Recent reports have indicated that the next iPhone, presumably titled the iPhone 5, will likely ship with a better processor, sharper graphics, a rejiggered chassis, and maybe even a hulking 4-inch display. (By comparison, the current iPhone packs a 3.5-inch screen.)?Also: 3D maps. If you believe the rumors, look for a September or October launch date.?

Defining Personal Finance ? Happy Mom Works at Home

Personal finance is something every person has to, at some point in their life, understand. Whether you know it or not if you make money or have expenses then you have personal finance matters.

Personal finance is basically the money you earn and the money you spend. The whole idea of personal finance is to be able to afford what you need and, hopefully, what you want.

Good personal finance involves a lot of management. Without management you end up with financial problems, like credit damage and even possibly a bankruptcy.

In order to understand your personal finances you have to get them in order. To do this you need to do the following:

1. Gather all of your income information- check stubs or other financial statements of income, gather all bills ? this includes any information on debts.

2. Go thorough your financial information and sort it out. You want all income in one pile and all expenses in another pile.

3. Find anything that is missing. If you have debts that you do not have information on then call the companies and get something in writing about he debts.

4. Create a record of your financial information. This record, your budget, will list your income and expenses.

5. Once you have everything written down you need to see if your expenses are greater then or less then your income. The goal is that you make more then you spend.

6. Identify problems with your spending, if any.

7. Develop a plan to allow your income and expenses to even out so you are earning as much or more then you are spending.

These seven steps will help you to get a good grip on your personal finances. You will be able to start to plan repayment of debts, see if you are spending money wisely and develop a plan to ensure you are never overspending and that your personal needs are met.

Understanding your personal finances is about more then making sure all your bills are paid. You will learn how to spend wisely and not waste money. You will learn how to make sure you are responsible for your debts, which will in turn help you keep a good credit rating. In the end you will be more relaxed about your finances. You will be able to borrow money when needed because your credit will be in good shape and you will not have to worry about meeting simple expenses.

FBI reportedly launches surveillance unit targeting online, VoIP ...

24 May 2012

CNET is reporting today that the FBI has quietly created a new web surveillance unit, charged with the task of developing new ways to intercept online, wireless, and VoIP communications. The Bureau has thus far been rather tight-lipped about its unit, known as the Domestic Communications Assistance Center, declining to name even the person in charge of it. CNET, however, was able to glean and piece together information about the initiative through interviews and reviews of internal government documents.

According to these sources, DCAC is designed to cover a relatively broad scope of surveillance- and security-related issues. Its mandate includes intercepting Skype messages, building wiretap devices, and serving as a ?surveillance help desk? for local, state, and federal authorities. The outfit will also be responsible for analyzing any data a provider or social network may submit in response to court orders. A source close to the matter told CNET that the DCAC is currently being launched, though it?s not yet operational. A Justice Department document, however, describes the agency as ?recently established.?

The FBI has long pushed for a more comprehensive approach to electronic surveillance, on the grounds that recent encryption developments have made it far more difficult for investigators to intercept communications. In February, then-general counsel Valerie Caproni testified before the House Judiciary Committee, arguing for new legislation that would require social networks and wireless providers to have clear procedures for divulging encrypted data when requested to do so by the government.

Valerie added that new laws were needed because ?individually tailored solutions have to be the exception and not the rule.? According to CNET?s sources, these ?individually tailored solutions? are exactly what DCAC has been charged with developing ? customized surveillance technologies designed for isolated companies or individuals.

?We should know more about the program and what the FBI is doing.?

Internal documents show that the DCAC has been in the works since at least 2008, when FBI director Robert Mueller received a briefing on it. Until recently, though, it?s remained shrouded in secrecy. The unit has no website, has never been formally announced, and has only received passing mention in public budget requests.

This secrecy has raised concerns among some civil libertarians, including Jennifer Lynch, an attorney at the Electronic Frontiers Foundation. ?We should know more about the program and what the FBI is doing,? Lynch told CNET. ?Which carriers they?re working with ? which carriers they?re having problems with. They?re doing the best they can to avoid being transparent.?

The FBI did provide a statement on its new center (referred to here, and elsewhere, as the National Domestic Communications Center, or NDAC), emphasizing that the unit will only provide the technical foundation for wiretap investigations, without actually performing any surveillance itself. ?It is important to point out that the NDCAC will not be responsible for the actual execution of any electronic surveillance court orders and will not have any direct operational or investigative role in investigations,? the statement reads. ?It will provide the technical knowledge and referrals in response to law enforcement?s requests for technical assistance.?
