Artist Kelly Spencer opens new show | Voxy.co.nz

As of today, Local illustrative artist Kelly Spencer is showing her enchanting new body of watercolour works on paper at Deluxe Cafe, Kent Terrace (Welllington).

The show is titled DEVA.

Spencer works as a freelance illustrative artist, moonlighting in graphic design, producing book illustrations, tshirt graphics, and poster designs. She has undergone no formal training in visual art, which has given her the freedom to create her own style, free from the well trodden path of formal art education.

She says she was inspired to create this new collection by the magnificent iconography and imagery of the Hindu Devas and Avatars, following a trip to Laos in late 2011: "I approach this subject matter from a purely artistic stance. I became transfixed by the elaborate characters of Hinduism. There's a richness and vibrance to the culture that we don't often encounter in the west.."

In 2011 Kelly's work was shown in a handful of venues throughout Wellington, including sell out shows at both Deluxe Cafe, and Thistle Hall community gallery. In the coming months Kelly will be exhibiting in group shows at Pixel Ink Gallery in Wellington, and also at Mint Gallery in Georgia, Atlanta (USA).

The show is open daily from 7am til 10pm April 9th until April 22nd.
