Military's dogs of war also suffer post-traumatic stress disorder

LACKLAND AIR FORCE BASE, Texas ? Not long after a Belgian Malinois named Cora went off to war, she earned a reputation for sniffing out the buried bombs that were the enemy's weapon of choice to kill or maim U.S. troops.

Cora could roam a hundred yards or more off her leash, detect an explosive and then lie down gently to signal danger. All she asked in return was a kind word or a biscuit, maybe a play session with a chew toy once the squad made it back to base.

"Cora always thought everything was a big game," said Air Force Tech. Sgt. Garry Laub, who trained Cora before she deployed. "She knew her job. She was a very squared-away dog."

But after months in Iraq and dozens of combat patrols, Cora changed. The transformation was not the result of one traumatic moment, but possibly the accumulation of stress and uncertainty brought on by the sharp sounds, high emotion and ever-present death in a war zone.

Cora ? deemed a "push-button" dog, one without much need for supervision ? became reluctant to leave her handler's side. Loud noises startled her. The once amiable Cora growled frequently and picked fights with other military working dogs.

When Cora returned to the U.S. two years ago, there was not a term for the condition that had undercut her combat effectiveness and shattered her nerves. Now there is: canine post-traumatic stress disorder.

"Dogs experience combat just like humans," said Marine Staff Sgt. Thomas Gehring, a dog handler assigned to the canine training facility at Lackland Air Force Base, who works with Cora daily.

Veterinarians and senior dog handlers at Lackland have concluded that dogs, like humans, can require treatment for PTSD, including conditioning, retraining and possibly medication such as the anti-anxiety drug Xanax. Some dogs, like 5-year-old Cora, just need to be treated as honored combat veterans and allowed to lead less-stressful lives.

Walter Burghardt Jr., chief of behavioral medicine and military working-dog studies at Lackland, estimates that at least 10% of the hundreds of dogs sent to Iraq and Afghanistan to protect U.S. troops have developed canine PTSD.

Cora appears to have a mild case. Other dogs come home traumatized.

"They're essentially broken and can't work," Burghardt said.

There are no official statistics, but Burghardt estimates that half of the dogs that return with PTSD or other behavioral hitches can be retrained for "useful employment" with the military or law enforcement, such as police departments, the Border Patrol or the Homeland Security Department.

The others dogs are retired and made eligible for adoption as family pets.

The decision to officially label the dogs' condition as PTSD was made by a working group of dog trainers and other specialists at Lackland. In most cases, such labeling of animal behavior would be subjected to peer review and scrutiny in veterinary medical journals.

But Burghardt and others in the group decided that they could not wait for that kind of lengthy professional vetting ? that a delay could endanger those who depend on the dogs.

Since the terrorist attacks of 2001, the military has added hundreds of canines and now has about 2,500 ? Dutch and German shepherds, Belgian Malinois and Labrador retrievers ? trained in bomb detection, guard duty or "controlled aggression" for patrolling.

Lackland trains dogs and dog handlers for all branches of the military. The huge base, located in San Antonio, has a $15-million veterinary hospital devoted to treating dogs working for the military or law enforcement, like a Border Patrol dog who lost a leg during a firefight between agents and a suspected drug smuggler.

"He's doing fine, much better," the handler yelled out when asked about the dog's condition.

Cora received her initial training here and then additional training with Laub at Moody Air Force Base in Georgia. Before they could deploy, however, Laub was transferred to Arkansas, and Cora shipped off to Iraq with a different handler, much to Laub's regret.

Social Gaming, Online Gambling Heats Up in London

Exclusive interviews with GEObet, Yazinno, and Velo Partners ahead of the Social Gaming & Gambling Summit on November 15th and the Social Gambling Conference on November 16th in London

Extreme Bingo and Texas Holdem from Yazino

HOLLYWOOD, CA (Hollywood Today) 2012/11/11 ? ?When I founded Yazino in 2009, 100% of people that I spoke to laughed about the opportunity I predicted,? says Yazino founder and CEO Hussein Chahine. ?And. now there are whole conferences dedicated to social casino and social gambling. I?m speaking in two just next week.? Chahine says his company?s aim has always been to be a massively multi-player social casino.

?Social gambling and online gambling are two separate but healthy industries,? says GEObet founder Gerry Gionet. ?Social gaming may sometimes offer casino games, but they are generally free and don?t offer prizes. Online gambling on the other hand is real gambling. We think that the best way to provide real gambling online is the same way they do it in casinos, in a controlled and regulated environment so that the players are protected.?

?We are involved is some fabulous businesses,? says partner Evan Hoff of the venture capital firm Velo Partners Limited. ?For example, Dragonplay is the leading poker app on the Android platform, offering free or ?freemium? entertainment to millions of poker enthusiasts. Others, like NYX Gaming are managing to offer their product to both online and land-based operators and are benefiting nicely from the convergence story.?

?Casino-style social gaming is the hottest thing in the social space at the moment,? says iGaming magazine Editor-in-Chief Michael Caselli, who is the organizer of the Social Gambling Conference. ?Revenues for casino-themed social games are around three times higher than the average social game, and that?s got everyone?s attention.?

The online gambling business has not been without risks. In 2006, U.S. senators Bill Frist, R-Tenn. and John Kyl, R-Ariz. banned online gambling by tacking the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act onto a port security bill. The law didn?t attack gamblers directly, rather made it illegal for banks to deal in online gambling proceeds. Party Poker, the world?s largest online site paid a $105 million fine and left the U.S. market to avoid prosecution. PokerStars, based on the Isle of Man, and another online operator Full Tilt in the UK?s Channel Islands, believed themselves beyond the reach of U.S. law. The Justice Department seized their U.S. assets on April 15th, 2011, an event known in the poker world as Black Friday.

?Online gambling is a market that is growing with regulation,? says Caselli. ?As more countries around the World and States within the U.S. license online gaming, more and more people get access to an online gaming site, view their advertising and have payment restrictions lifted from their credit cards. The market is currently a 40 billion dollar market and will one day be as important to bricks-and mortar casinos as their land-based businesses.?

?There are between 500 and 600 tribal casinos in America and each and everyone of these casinos is interested in taking their businesses online,? says Gionet, who aims to have GEObet bring together American Indian casinos under a single operational concept. ?Licensing and integration costs can reach into the $600K and higher to build it not including executive staffing. There are IGT, Microgaming, Playtech, NetEnt, PlayNGo to name a few who all have an array of casino games.? GEObet offers an integrated solution to bring casinos online.

?Building a regulated platform from the ground up requires huge amount of infrastructure,? says Chahine. ?Audit, KYC [Know Your Customer, a set of banking regulations] and various other considerations, in order to fully comply with gambling rules. The recent partnership of Zynga and Bwin-party shows that even the biggest social gaming developer with a successful suite of casino-style games is incapable of building its own gambling platform. At Yazino our multi-player platform, although we?ve focused purely on using it for social gaming so far, was wired for gambling from the beginning because we saw the future of the industry going this way some time ago.?

?For traditional online gambling operators, the main challenge is navigating the transition from what we call dot-com grey markets to regulated, more highly taxed markets,? says Hoff. ?On the social side, the primary challenge is scale. Many of those operators who are sub-scale are struggling, say 100k DAUs [Daily Active Users], even with good revenues per customer.?

Mobile is bringing new players to online and casinos are looking to online to expand their business. The most popular base for online gambling are locations that can services widely across Europe, such as Malta, and other ?white-list? jurisdictions such as Isle of Man.

Because many investors will not look at gambling due to regulatory issues or other concerns, valuations are not at the same level as the tech sector. ?Amazingly, we are still seeing new entrants, not from land-based or online casinos, entering the market, often with a mobile focus, and succeeding off a zero base,? says Hoff who will be at the conference looking for investments for Velo Partners. ?We will be looking at some new start-ups and business plans and it?s always exciting to see who is doing what, and what sort of innovation the sector can expect.?

Velo Partners looks at the whole gaming vertical from land-based to mobile to social, and from seed stage to mature businesses. They typically take a 10% to 25% stake in companies they invest.

?Convergence is happening right now on many levels,? says Hoff. ?Operators such as land-based iconic brand the Hippodrome Casino are launching integrated online offerings, while large suppliers like IGT have meaningful investments into both online technology and social gaming. It is difficult to categorize the convergence story as purely a competitive threat or a partnerships opportunity. It is both. The social gambling industry is somewhat different?new demographics, new product and new distribution channels are still driving sector-wide growth.?

The Social Gaming and Gambling Summit kicks off at 9am on Thursday, November 15th in London, with a presentation by Facebook Gaming Marketing Solutions specialist Owen O?Donoghue. The conference will come to Los Angeles on December 14th and 15th.

The Social Gambling Conference kicks off at Friday November 16th in London with a panel of experts on the legality of social gaming and gambling in different jurisdictions. A notable session is Noel Hayden of Gamesys talking about Bingo Friendly, the social gambling game on Facebook.

Did the Samsung Galaxy S3 really outsell Apple's iPhone 4S in Q3 2012?

Did the Samsung Galaxy S3 really outsell Apple's iPhone 4S in Q3 2012?

Did the Samsung Galaxy S3 really outsell Apple's iPhone 4S in Q3 2012? A bunch of technology blogs ran stories saying it did last week, so it has to be true, right? The stores were based on a press release that claimed it did, so it must have, right? The presser, was issued by the impressively named Strategy Analytics and headlined Samsung Galaxy S3 Becomes World's Best-Selling Smartphone Model in Q3 2012, so it has to to be true, right? Well, wait, what did the lede to the presser say?

According to the latest research from Strategy Analytics, Samsung?s Galaxy S3 overtook Apple?s iPhone 4S to become the world?s best-selling smartphone model for the first time ever in the third quarter of 2012. A large touchscreen, extensive distribution and generous operator subsidies have propelled the Galaxy S3 to the top spot.

And what was senior analyst from Strategy Analytics, Neil Shah, quoted as saying?

Samsung?s Galaxy S3 smartphone model shipped 18.0 million units worldwide during the third quarter of 2012. The Galaxy S3 captured an impressive 11 percent share of all smartphones shipped globally and it has become the world?s best-selling smartphone model for the first time ever. A large touchscreen design, extensive distribution across dozens of countries, and generous operator subsidies have been among the main causes of the Galaxy S3?s success. Apple shipped an estimated 16.2 million iPhone 4S units worldwide for second place, as consumers temporarily held off purchases in anticipation of a widely expected iPhone 5 upgrade at the end of the quarter.

Oh, wait, the quote doesn't match the headline and lede, does it? Why use sold in the headline and lede, and shipped in the quote? Which is it? Why use sold at all if they're talking about shipped? What does sold mean? What does shipped mean? Are they counting only devices actually sold to customers or devices stuffed into channels, sitting on shelves, or dumped into return bins?

How did they get numbers for the Galaxy S3 when Samsung doesn't disclose device sales numbers? Did they take Samsung's 30-million sold from May to October press release, divide by 5 and multiply by 3 to get 18? Did they assume no change in sales acceleration at all occurred at all during that period?

How did they get numbers for the iPhone 4S when Apple, who does disclose device sales numbers, doesn't break them down by model? Did they take Apple's 26.9 million July to September number, shift it a month forward, and... um... ah...

Why is the Galaxy S3 considered one phone when there are actually at least 2 very different phones that are simply sold under the same brand and use completely different processor architectures -- the Samsung Exynos 4 Quad sold internationally, and the Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 sold in North America and Japan?

The iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S have different processor architectures, why aren't they considered the same phone? Is an "S" more of a differentiator than an "International" or "North American"? If so, why?

Why even put out a press release on a metrics report that so conflates and confounds the very metrics it purports to deliver? Why re-blog that press release without questioning why the crux of the headline and lede don't match the crux of the reported metrics? Why leave readers with no real idea who sold what and how many last quarter? And if the Galaxy S3 really did outsell the iPhone 4S in Q3, 2012, why not give Samsung, Apple, investors, and consumers higher quality reporting on it?

Sony ships Xperia advance to the US, offers unlocked ruggedness for $300

Americans who likes the Sony Xperia go's approach to lifeproof smartphone design won't have to live vicariously through their overseas friends anymore. Keeping up its recent habit of selling unlocked versions of niche devices, Sony is selling the toughened smartphone in the US as the Xperia advance. The 3.5-inch handset won't initially be a surprise to those who've had a peek at an international version, right through to the out-of-the-box Android 2.3 installation -- you'll be sitting in line for a taste of Ice Cream Sandwich or Jelly Bean like everyone else. For most, the advantage will rest in a dust- and water-resistant phone that can wield its 3G on AT&T or Straight Talk while being free to use at least basic GSM calling abroad. Be sure to shop around before committing to an Xperia advance, though. While Newegg's $250 price makes a reasonable case, the $300 official cost has our minds wandering to the much more powerful (if more fragile) Nexus 4.
