University of Miami wants Kyle Wright interview tossed from NCAA investigation

One of the points of contention in the NCAA?s ongoing battle with the University of Miami is that UM wants an incriminating interview with former Hurricanes quarterback Kyle Wright tossed from being used as evidence, three sources told The Miami Herald.

Wright, whose name was redacted (and instead identified as ?Student 1?) from the version of UM?s motion to dismiss recently leaked to the public, was interviewed by the NCAA on Feb.?24, 2012, an interview that ?should have been expunged from the record,? according to UM?s motion filed March 29.

UM contends that the questions asked could have been ?improperly influenced by information that the enforcement staff had received? from the December 2011 deposition of former UM equipment room worker Sean Allen.

The 45-page motion states that during the interview, Wright provided information ?used to substantiate? six allegations against Miami.

In an October 2012 story, The Miami Herald reported that Allen was asked by the NCAA about at least two trips that Allen claimed he and Michael Huyghue, then UM booster Nevin Shapiro?s former business partner, took with Wright in 2005.

One trip was to the Bahamas and another to a Snoop Dogg concert at the Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, where they stayed at the Ritz Carlton. Wright was a sophomore then.

But Allen was never questioned during his December 2011 deposition about those trips. He was asked about whether he or Shapiro provided money or extra benefits to Wright and numerous other football players at UM.

UM?s position is that such information was supposed to be removed as evidence by the NCAA because Wright would have never offered it had he not known Allen had been deposed.

After hiring an outside law firm to conduct an investigation of the NCAA?s enforcement-related handling of the case, college athletics? governing body said it removed all ?tainted? evidence tied to two bankruptcy-related depositions conducted by Shapiro?s lawyer, Maria Elena Perez. The final report made public by the NCAA in February said Perez was paid to improperly obtain the information during the depositions of Allen and Huyghue. The NCAA does not have subpoena power.

?The Notice [of Allegations] contained several allegations that were substantiated either completely or in large measure from testimony provided by [Wright] in his February 24, 2012, interview,? UM wrote in its motion.

Two sources said that Friday was the deadline for the NCAA to file its response to multiple motions-to-dismiss by UM lawyers and several former coaches. Each said they hadn?t heard if that had happened as of late in the day.

An NCAA spokeswoman did not respond to a phone message and email left by The Miami Herald.

The Associated Press reported Friday that Wright ?appears several times in the notice of allegations against Miami, and that he is one of 48 players the NCAA said received ?VIP access and beverage service? from Shapiro at Miami nightclubs between 2002 and 2009; He was also one of 38 players the NCAA said was entertained at Shapiro?s home, one of 18 who received invitations to bowling alley outings from the former booster, and one of seven who dined with him at a Benihana restaurant.

?Wright, also according to the [NOA] against Miami, received at least $1,824 in impermissible benefits ?in an effort to secure signing with Axcess Sports.???

Sweating the small stuff may harm your mental health | Scope Blog

German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche famously said, ?What doesn?t kill us makes us stronger.? But that may not be the case when it comes to daily stress, according to findings recently published in Psychological Science.

In the study, researchers analyzed survey data from the Midlife Development in the United States (MIDUS) and National Study of Daily Experiences (NSDE). Study results showed that minor sources of stress, not just major life events, can have long-term consequences on mental-health outcomes. According to a UC Irvine release:

.. [R]esearchers found that participants? negative emotional responses to daily stressors ? such as arguments with a spouse or partner, conflicts at work, standing in long lines or sitting in traffic ? predicted psychological distress and self-reported anxiety/mood disorders 10 years later.

?How we manage daily emotions matters to our overall mental health,? said [lead researcher Susan Charles, PhD, UC Irvine professor of psychology & social behavior.] ?We?re so focused on long-term goals that we don?t see the importance of regulating our emotions. Changing how you respond to stress and how you think about stressful situations is as important as maintaining a healthy diet and exercise routine.?

The results were based on data from 711 men and women between 25 and 74.

The study builds on earlier work showing that how people react to everyday stressors, rather than the stress itself, influences physical chronic-health problems later in life, such as pain and cardiovascular conditions.

Accused of complicity in Alzheimer's, amyloid proteins may be getting a bad rap

Apr. 3, 2013 ? Amyloids -- clumps of misfolded proteins found in the brains of people with Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative disorders -- are the quintessential bad boys of neurobiology. They're thought to muck up the seamless workings of the neurons responsible for memory and movement, and researchers around the world have devoted themselves to devising ways of blocking their production or accumulation in humans.

But now a pair of recent research studies from the Stanford University School of Medicine sets a solid course toward rehabilitating the reputation of the proteins that form these amyloid tangles, or plaques. In the process, they appear poised to turn the field of neurobiology on its head.

The first study, published in August, showed that an amyloid-forming protein called beta amyloid, which is strongly implicated in Alzheimer's disease, could reverse the symptoms of a multiple-sclerosis-like neurodegenerative disease in laboratory mice.

The second study, to be published April 3 in Science Translational Medicine, extends the finding to show that small portions of several notorious amyloid-forming proteins (including well-known culprits like tau and prion proteins) can also quickly alleviate symptoms in mice with the condition -- despite the fact that the fragments can and do form the long tendrils, or fibrils, previously thought harmful to nerve health.

"What we're finding is that, at least under certain circumstances, these amyloid peptides actually help the brain," said Lawrence Steinman, MD, professor of neurology and neurological sciences and of pediatrics. "This really turns the 'amyloid-is-bad' dogma upside down. It will require a shift in people's fundamental beliefs about neurodegeneration and diseases like multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's."

Steinman is a noted expert in multiple sclerosis whose research led to the development of natalizumab (marketed as Tysabri), a potent treatment for the disease.

Taken together, the studies begin to suggest the radical new idea that full-length, amyloid-forming proteins may in fact be produced by the body as a protective, rather than destructive, force. In particular, Steinman's study shows that these proteins may function as molecular chaperones, escorting and removing from sites of injury specific molecules involved in inflammation and inappropriate immune responses.

Steinman, who is also the medical school's George A. Zimmermann Professor, is the corresponding author of the research. Jonathan Rothbard, PhD, a senior research scientist in the Steinman laboratory, is the senior author; postdoctoral scholar Michael Kurnellas, PhD, is the lead author.

Although the specific findings of Steinman's two studies are surprising, there have been inklings from previous research that amyloid-forming proteins may not be all bad. In particular, inhibiting, or knocking out, the expression of several of the proteins in the mouse models of multiple sclerosis -- a technique that should block the course of the disease if these proteins are the cause -- instead worsened the animals' symptoms.

And there's the fact that these so-called dangerous amyloid-forming molecules are surprisingly prevalent. "We know the body makes a lot of amyloid-forming proteins in response to injury," said Steinman. "I'm doubtful that that's done to produce more harm. For example, the prion protein is found in every cell in our bodies. What is it doing? It's possible that any therapeutic maneuver to remove all of these proteins could interfere with their natural function."

Understanding how amyloids form requires an understanding of the biology of proteins, which are essentially strings of smaller components called amino acids attached end to end. Once they're made, these protein strings twist and fold into specific three-dimensional shapes that fit together like keys and locks to do the work of the cell.

A misfolded protein is likely to be unable to carry out its duties and must be disposed of by the body's cellular waste-management system. Amyloid-forming proteins (of which there are around 20), however, don't go quietly, if at all. Instead, they initiate a chain reaction with other misfolded proteins -- forming long, insoluble strands called fibrils that mat together to form amyloid clumps. These clumps appear consistently in the brains of people with neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's and multiple sclerosis, but not in the brains of healthy people.

Although these clumps are thought to be detrimental to nerve cells, it's not entirely clear how they cause harm. One possibility is the ability of the fibrils to form cylindrical pores that could disrupt the cellular membrane and interfere with the orderly flow of ions and molecules used by the cells to communicate and transmit nerve signals. Regardless, their very presence suggests a diagnosis of neurodegeneration to many clinicians, including -- until recently -- Steinman.

"We began this research because these molecules are present in the brains of people with multiple sclerosis," said Steinman. "We expected to show that the presence of beta amyloid made the disease worse in laboratory animals. Instead, we saw a great deal of benefit."

Intrigued by the results of their first study, the researchers next tested the effect of small, six-amino-acid portions of several amyloid-forming proteins, including beta amyloid, which appeared likely to share a three-dimensional structure. They found that nearly all of the tiny protein molecules, or hexamers, were also able to temporarily reverse the symptoms of multiple sclerosis in the mice (when the treatment was stopped, the mice developed signs of the condition within a few days).

The researchers noted, however, that the curative effect of the hexamers was linked to their ability to form fibrils similar, but not identical, to their longer parent molecules. For example, these simplified hexamer fibrils are more easily formed and broken apart than those composed of whole proteins. They are also thought not to be able to form the cylindrical pores that might damage cell membranes. Finally, the hexamer fibrils appear to inhibit the formation of fibrils from full-length proteins -- perhaps by blocking, or failing to promote, the chain reaction that initiates fibril formation.

When Steinman and his colleagues mixed the fibril-forming hexamers with blood plasma from three people with multiple sclerosis, they found that the fibrils bound to and removed from solution many potentially damaging molecules involved in inflammation and the immune response.

"These hexamer fibrils appear to be working to remove dangerous chemicals from the vicinity of the injury," said Steinman.

The researchers are eager to pursue the use of these small hexamers as therapies for neurodegenerative diseases like multiple sclerosis. Much research is still needed, but Steinman is hopeful.

"The lessons we learn from our study of amyloid-forming proteins in multiple sclerosis could be helpful for stroke and brain trauma, as well as for Alzheimer's," said Steinman. "We're gaining insight into how current therapeutic approaches may be affecting the body, and beginning to understand the nuances necessary to design a successful treatment. Although it will take time, we're determined to move promising results out of the laboratory and into the clinic as quickly as possible."

Rangers get 4-0 win over Astros

HOUSTON (AP) ? A day after watching Yu Darvish come within one out of a perfect game, Alexi Ogando was determined to pitch well to help the Texas Rangers wrap up the three game series against Houston with a win.

Ogando got things started well and four Texas relievers finished it off to shut out the Astros again, combining for a five-hitter in the Rangers' 4-0 win over the Astros on Wednesday.

"It was a spectacular game, and it certainly motivated me to pitch well today," Ogando said in Spanish through a translator.

Lance Berkman doubled in a run for the Rangers a day after they blanked Houston 7-0 behind Darvish's nearly historic gem.

It is the first time the Rangers have pitched consecutive shutouts since they had three straight in July 2011.

Ogando (1-0) allowed four hits with a career-high 10 strikeouts in 6 1-3 innings. The young and inexperienced Astros have struck out 43 times in their first three games.

"Ogando is known for striking folks out," Texas manager Ron Washington said. "He had a good fastball, he has a tremendous slider and now he's got a changeup and a curveball to go with all of that."

It's the most strikeouts a pitching staff has combined for in the first three games of a season in major league history, and the most since Cleveland fanned 42 in the first three of the 1966 season.

"Yesterday, it was more about their guy, and today it was more about our guys," Houston manager Bo Porter said when asked about the strikeouts. "We just had our guys expanding the zone way too often. We need to make an adjustment and do a better job. The fastballs that we had an opportunity to do something with, we either fouled them off or didn't get them (in play)."

The Rangers are also the fourth team in major league history since 1916 to start the season by striking out 10 or more batters in each of their first three games.

Robbie Ross, Tanner Scheppers and Michael Kirkman allowed one hit combined in the next 1 2-3 innings. Closer Joe Nathan struck out the side in the ninth.

Houston starter Philip Humber (0-1) yielded five hits and a run in 5 2-3 innings in his Astros debut.

Nelson Cruz and A.J. Pierzynski had two hits apiece and drove in a run each for the Rangers.

Ogando returned to the rotation this season after spending last year in the bullpen, where he had a career-high 58 relief appearances.

He retired nine straight Astros before Carlos Pena singled with two outs in the sixth inning. Chris Carter lined out to end that inning, and Houston's next hit, a one-out single in the seventh by Justin Maxwell, chased Ogando.

Humber had retired 10 of 11 batters before walking Berkman to start the sixth inning. Adrian Beltre and David Murphy followed with back-to-back singles to load the bases. Nelson Cruz grounded into a double play that sent Berkman home to give Texas a 1-0 lead and chase Humber.

He was replaced by Wesley Wright, who retired Pierzynski to limit the damage

Humber, who threw a perfect game for the White Sox last season, helped nearby Rice University win a national championship in 2003.

Berkman's RBI double to left-center in the eighth inning made it 2-0. Cruz singled in a run before Beltre scored on a sacrifice fly by Pierzynski to push the lead to 4-0. Carter got an error on the play when he missed the catch despite being right under it.

Berkman finished his first series with the Rangers 6 for 10 with three RBIs.

"He's what I expected," Washington said. "He's a pro. He certainly knows what he's doing up there in that box. He's a tremendous addition to us."

After going 26 outs before getting a hit Tuesday night, the Astros got their first knock out of the way immediately on Wednesday when Jose Altuve hit a leadoff double.

They weren't able to build off the strong start though, as Ogando retired the next seven batters, with four strikeouts.

Humber got into trouble in the second when he allowed consecutive one-out singles to Cruz and Pierzynski. He struck out Mitch Moreland before plunking Leonys Martin in the right foot to load the bases. But he was able to retired Rick Ankiel to escape the jam.

The Astros haven't scored since the eighth inning of an 8-2 win in the season opener on Sunday night, when they overcame for a night having the majors' lowest payroll and a roster full of replacement-level players.

NOTES: Both teams are off on Thursday. Texas LHP Derek Holland takes the mound against Jason Vargas on Friday in the Rangers' home opener against the Angels. Houston continues its homestand on Friday when Brad Peacock faces Oakland's Dan Straily in the opener of a three-game series. ... The two triples Andrus had on Tuesday night tied a franchise record for triples in a game. It was the first time it had been done since Michael Young had two on Sept. 3, 2002 at Baltimore. Andrus has 25 career triples, tied for fifth most in team history.

Buy Neil Armstrong's childhood toy plane -- or his toothbrush

Long before Neil Armstrong flew to the moon, he played with this red metal toy plane, which is now up for auction by Heritage Auctions of Dallas.

A toy plane that Neil Armstrong is said to have played with as a child ? years before he became a naval aviator, research pilot and the first astronaut to walk on the moon ? will be auctioned off this month in Dallas.

The red metal toy, which Heritage Auctions expects to sell for as much as $2,500 at its April 18 space-themed auction, was discovered by the family who bought Armstrong's boyhood home in 1964. The model airplane was discovered in the house's attic, along with a red wagon and some homework papers that also belonged to the future Apollo 11 moonwalker.

"In July 1964 my parents purchased the home on 601 W. Benton Street, Wapakoneta, Ohio from Steve and Viola Armstrong," Jacqueline (Miller) Knapke wrote, describing Armstrong's parents in her letter of authenticity. "Mrs. V. Armstrong verified at that time that the wagon and this airplane was Neil's and that he and his brother played with it."

Neil Armstrong died on Aug. 25, at age 82 following complications from heart surgery. During his lifetime, he refrained from selling his memorabilia and, in response to what he attributed to the commercialization of the hobby, stopped signing autographs in the 1990s.

Heritage is also offering for sale the homework papers and a handmade booklet that were also left behind in the attic. Each of the documents' lots is expected to sell for $1,500 to $2,500.

Collector's legacy
Like Armstrong's boyhood effects, which were saved and consigned for auction by a third party, the majority of the lots being offered by Heritage represent the holdings of a collector, rather than the astronauts themselves.

Three hundred out of the more than 550 lots for sale were consigned by the Steven R. Belasco estate.

"The collection is a tribute to the incredible prowess of its collector," Michael Riley, Heritage senior historian and its chief cataloger for space exploration, said in a statement. "He was as well known and dedicated a collector as any of us ever encountered."

Belasco died in 2012 due to an acute respiratory infection. In 2004, he bid $16,000 on a toothbrush that flew to the moon, which drew media attention ? not only because of the price he paid, but because he was a vice president at Colgate-Palmolive, a company known for its oral hygiene products.

That same dental instrument, a light blue Lactona "Tooth Tip" brush that astronaut Buzz Aldrin used throughout the Apollo 11 mission he flew with Armstrong in 1969, is now estimated to sell for upward of $24,000.

Another Aldrin space artifact?highlighted by Heritage is a flown flashlight from the Gemini 12 mission, estimated to sell for $10,000 to $15,000. The Velcro-wrapped torch was originally purchased by Belasco in 1999 for $9,200.

The other items from Belasco's 13 years collecting space memorabilia span Mercury, Gemini and Apollo missions, including a significant grouping of artifacts that flew to the moon's surface.

In addition to the Armstrong and Belasco lots, Heritage is also selling more than two dozen items from Lola Morrow, the 1960's "den mother to the astronauts" who served as the crew members' secretary in Cape Canaveral, Fla.

The Morrow lots include astronaut-autographed books and photos, as well as letters and mission patch charms.

The highlight item may be the humorous drawing that was gifted to her upon her retirement from NASA in 1969. The caricature, which shows Morrow at her desk with six arms typing, writing, paging, talking on the phone, waving, and handling reports ? all at once, is signed by 26 astronauts including Armstrong, Aldrin and eight other moonwalkers. It is estimated to sell for $6,000 to $10,000.

Stones returning to stage: Why should we care?

NEW YORK (AP) ? Ladies and gentlemen, the Rolling Stones.

With Wednesday's expected announcement of a new Stones tour, those words will again signal the start of a rock 'n' roll show. Young music fans may wonder why there's still a fuss over dad's, or grandpa's, favorite band. Here are five reasons to care.

1. LIVING HISTORY: Elvis Presley is dead. The Beatles will never perform again. The Who is down to two originals. Membership of rock's Greatest Generation is fading. The Stones, Bob Dylan and Paul McCartney are links to a special time in music history, and you can still see them in concert. If the Stones' form of classic rock moves you, it's hard to conceive of a band today building such an impressive catalog in the same style. Fashion, and the business, has moved on.

2. LIVE BAND: They'll never admit it, but deep down the Stones surely know they haven't made memorable new music in decades. They have, however, kept their chops and deliver the songs you want to hear with power and precision. You can't find a better Stones tribute band. The Stones are fully aware of their best work; you won't hear a flabby show. The past few times out, it has been more than greatest hits performed on autopilot.

3. KEITH RICHARDS: There was a time, kids, when Keith was a menace to society, a walking advertisement of the evils of drugs. Now he's a beloved figure, humanized by one of rock's best biographies and the model for Johnny Depp's Capt. Jack Sparrow character in the "Pirates of the Caribbean" series. He's your cool, crazy uncle. He plays a pretty decent guitar, too.

4. CHARLIE'S FACE: There's no better facial expression in rock 'n' roll than the bemused one worn by drummer Charlie Watts as he takes in the madness around him. Watch Watts when Mick Jagger does a particularly audacious chicken strut.

5. THE LAST TIME: We'll be surprised if this is labeled as some sort of retirement tour; they've been subjected to so many age jokes over the years that the topic itself is old. And these men are in surprisingly good shape for the years of hard living. But Richards and Jagger are 69, and Watts will be 72 in June. Reality is catching up. Probably even before they expect it, they'll be singing "The Last Time" for the last time.

Solar village to house microgrid project

Apr. 2, 2013 ? Four solar homes built by students at Missouri University of Science and Technology will soon become home to an experimental microgrid to manage and store renewable energy. The houses, all past entries into the Solar Decathlon design competition, make up the university's Solar Village.

In its initial phase, the project involves Missouri S&T students and researchers, along with representatives from utility companies, the Army Corps of Engineers and several Missouri businesses. The goal is to demonstrate the feasibility of small-scale microgrids for future use.

"Distributed power generation is one of the key elements of a microgrid. In our case, we're using solar panels," says Dr. Mehdi Ferdowsi, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering at Missouri S&T. "It's called a microgrid because it's less dependent on the utility power grid. The idea is that if there is a blackout, it can operate in what we call 'islanded mode,' and convert to using stored solar energy.

"Utility companies are interested to see if this could be a viable business model for the future," he says. "For example, they could rent out renewable energy generators to subdivisions, creating a new paradigm for selling electricity."

Ferdowsi says that Missouri S&T's Solar Village is an ideal place to test microgrid technology. "The four houses were built in a 10-year span of time and each was designed individually, but converting them to the technology is not complicated," he says.

Students living in the solar houses will monitor the results. "We hope to demonstrate that the technology is expandable to many, based on these four houses," he says. "The students will also demonstrate the human aspect of the project -- how people interact with a new system of energy management."

Components necessary for the project include batteries for energy storage, a power electronic converter, software and hardware.

Two lithium battery racks were donated by A123 Systems Inc. (now Wanxiang Group) in December. Ferdowsi estimates their combined worth at $75,000 to $100,000. "These batteries are very efficient, but they are super heavy with 8-foot-tall racks," he says. "We hope to have them installed in a shed in the Solar Village by the end of summer, along with the converter." The hardware and software would be located in the houses.

Photovoltaic (PV) arrays on the solar homes are designed to generate about 25 kilowatts of power. The donated batteries will provide 60 kilowatt hours of energy storage for the microgrid.

Researchers are now deciding which converter and intelligence system to purchase. "Security is also a factor -- we want to be sure the system is hacker-proof," says Ferdowsi.

Several Missouri S&T alumni serve on the advisory council that was created to guide the integration of microgrid components into the Solar Village, and to ensure the microgrid is designed for future expansions.

One, alumnus Brent McKinney, manager of electrical transmission with City Utilities of Springfield (Mo.), helped facilitate a $75,000 grant for the project through the American Public Power Association. The grant will help fund battery array installation and graduate student research in community energy storage.

Dr. Fatih Dogan, professor of materials science and engineering at S&T, has been working with St. Louis-based utility company Ameren, which plans to provide and install a residential fuel cell and heat recovery demonstration unit in the village. The fuel cell will serve as an additional microgrid component.

Future expansion plans include incorporating a wind turbine, generators, electric vehicles and an electric vehicle charging infrastructure.

"There is so much potential in this project, and so many groups that can benefit from it," says Angela Rolufs, director of the office of sustainable energy and environmental engagement at Missouri S&T, which manages the Solar Village. "We had this great idea and all the pieces for it -- we just needed some help making it happen."
