Apple's iCloud and iTunes Match Are Top Cloud Media Services in ...

According to a report from Strategy Analytics (via Engadget) Apple's iCloud and iTunes Match are the most frequently used cloud media services, with a combined usage total of 27%.

To get its numbers, Strategy Analytics asked 2,300 Americans the following question: ?Have you ever used any of the following online digital locker services which enabled you to store music, video (including TV shows and movies) or games online (?in the cloud? and stream them to an Internet connected device??

cloudservices
Dropbox came in second at 17% and Amazon's Cloud Drive came in third with 15%. Google Drive came in fourth, with Ultraviolet, Samsung Music Hub, Online, LG Cloud, and Galkai following behind.

The survey revealed that the majority of people (at 55%) had never used a cloud media service at all, and as Strategy Analytics points out, Dropbox, with its second place ranking, is the only service without an associated content ecosystem. Music is a major factor in cloud usage with 90% of Apple, Amazon, and Google cloud users storing music. 45% of Dropbox users use the service to store music.

?Music is currently the key battleground in the war for cloud domination. Google is tempting users by giving away free storage for 20,000 songs which can be streamed to any Android device, a feature both Amazon and Apple charge annual subscriptions for,? observes Ed Barton, Strategy Analytics' Director of Digital Media.
Usage of cloud storage is skewed heavily towards younger people, being especially popular among 20?24 year olds. iCloud and iTunes Match were the only services with more female than male users, and Google Drive skewed towards a male subscription base.

Carnival cruises cancelled. Ship out of service until June.

Carnival cruises cancelled after the line announced that a crippled ship would be out of service until June, delaying 10 voyages. The Carnival cruises were cancelled after an engine fire on the ?Triumph left 4,200 passengers stranded for five days.?

The ship is now set to return to service June 3, meaning an additional 10?cruises?from Galveston, Texas, will be canceled. Guests on the affected voyages will receive a full refund, reimbursement for non-refundable transportation costs and a 25 percent discount on a future four- to five-day?cruise.

Also, the?Carnival?Sunshine, which is undergoing a scheduled full-ship makeover, will return to service May 5, following the cancellation of two European?cruises.

The?cruise?line is making significant investments to enhance its backup systems and the scope of hotel services that can run on emergency power, and further improve each ship's fire prevention, detection and suppression systems.

"We sincerely regret canceling these?cruises?and disrupting our guests' vacation plans,"?Carnival?president and CEO Gerry Cahill said in a release. "We are fully committed to applying the recommendations stemming from our fleet-wide review and to make whatever investments are needed despite the difficult decision to impact people's vacations."

Mike Driscoll, editor of?Cruise?Week, said?Carnival?is smart to take the extra time and make the necessary improvements, because it shows the company is taking the recent shipboard problems seriously.

"The cancellations are painful in the short-term, both to?Carnival?customers and?Carnival?Corp.'s bottom line, but a very shrewd maneuver in the long-term," Driscoll said. "Carnival?is facing increasing scrutiny, not just from media, but from Congress, so they're acting quickly to forestall legislative maneuvers that might require them to make such moves anyway down the line. The view is that it's better to do it on your own, as opposed to having politicians require you to make changes."

Stewart Chiron, an industry expert known as "The?Cruise?Guy," said the fact that?Carnival?is making the additional redundancy and fire prevention upgrades to the Sunshine, which was already in dry-dock receiving a $150 million refit, demonstrates that?Carnivalmeans to make the improvements fleet-wide.

"This isn't going to take years of discussion and committee," Chiron said. "These changes are going to be implemented immediately, and these are the first two ships to get it. It's actually very encouraging."

In its earnings release last week, the Miami-based company said advance bookings for 2013 are behind the same point from a year ago. The company blamed Europe's economic problems for its inability to raise prices. North American prices are up slightly but those in Europe and Asia are lagging. Passengers in Europe are booking vacations much closer to the date of departure,?Carnivalsaid.

But vacationers have been wary about booking?cruises?ever since the Costa Concordia ? also owned by?Carnival?? sank off the coast of Italy in January 2012. Passengers have returned to the seas, but many needed to be coaxed by deep discounts.

And the Triumph wasn't the only?Carnival?ship to experience problems this year. The company ended the voyage of the?CarnivalDream last week after the ship's backup emergency diesel generator failed, causing problems with elevators and toilets. Instead of allowing the?cruise?ship to return to Florida,?Carnival?was forced to charter airplanes to fly home the ship's 4,300 passengers. The Dream's next trip, which was supposed to start Sunday, was canceled.

The company also said that another ship ? the Legend ? was having mechanical problems and skipped its stop at the Cayman Islands, heading straight to its final port in Tampa instead.

Carnival?runs?cruises?under 10 brands including Holland America, Princess, Cunard and its namesake line.

Samsung, Flo Rida introduce massive Giga Sound MX-FS9000 speakers (update: hands-on video)

Kate Upton, Eli Manning -- this is a seriously star-studded Samsung event here in New York -- and the latest celebrity to step up on stage is Flo Rida, who helped unveil the new, super-sized Giga Sound MX-FS9000 speakers. Featuring dual 15-inch subwoofers that deliver 2560W in sound, they'll go for $1,499 when they debut in May. (There's also a slightly smaller version, the MX-FS9000, which will hit stores in June for $999.) The big-name guests have sent this room of photographers into a frenzy, so it will take a few minutes for us to push our way through to get hands-on. In the mean time, take a look at the full press release past the break.

Update: We've now had a chance to check out the gigantic rig. The speakers are a bit flashy for our taste, given the size and constant LED color cycling, but we can certainly see them being a fit for karaoke bars and the like, thanks to microphone inputs and an option to record your voice to an attached USB storage device. Sadly, the Samsung rep we spoke to was unwilling to demonstrate their full potential at the crowded venue, so we can't really speak to audio quality. If you're thinking about making a purchase, we'd suggest checking them out at a retail store before getting these bad boys home -- as they're quite hefty, you probably won't want to be making any returns. You can also take a closer look in our gallery below or the hands-on video after the break.

Electrons are not enough: Cuprate superconductors defy convention

Mar. 18, 2013 ? To engineers, it's a tale as old as time: Electrical current is carried through materials by flowing electrons. But physicists at the University of Illinois and the University of Pennsylvania found that for copper-containing superconductors, known as cuprates, electrons are not enough to carry the current.

"The story of electrical conduction in metals is told entirely in terms of electrons. The cuprates show that there is something completely new to be understood beyond what electrons are doing," said Philip Phillips, a professor of physics and of chemistry at the U. of I.

In physics, Luttinger's theorem states that the number of electrons in a material is the same as the number of electrons in all of its atoms added together. Electrons are the sub-atomic particles that carry the current in a conductive material. Much-studied conducting materials, such as metals and semiconductors, hold true to the theorem.

Phillips' group works on the theory behind high-temperature superconductors. In superconductors, current flows freely without resistance. Cuprate superconductors have puzzled physicists with their superconducting ability since their discovery in 1987.

The researchers developed a model outlining the breakdown of Luttinger's theorem that is applicable to cuprate superconductors, since the hypotheses that the theorem is built on are violated at certain energies in these materials. The group tested it and indeed found discrepancies between the measured charge and the number of mobile electrons in cuprate superconductors, defying Luttinger.

"This result is telling us that the physics cannot be described by electrons alone," Phillips said. "This means that the cuprates are even weirder than previously thought: Something other than electrons carries the current."

"Theorists have suspected that something like this was true but no one has been able to prove it," Phillips said. "Electrons are charged. Therefore, if an electron does not contribute to the charge count, then there is a lot of explaining to do."

Now the researchers are exploring possible candidates for current-carriers, particularly a novel kind of excitation called unparticles.

Phillips, U. of I. undergraduate student Kiaran Dave (now a graduate student at MIT) and University of Pennsylvania professor Charles Kane published their findings in the journal Physical Review Letters. The National Science Foundation and the Center for Emergent Superconductivity (through a DOE Energy Frontiers Research Center) supported this work.

Under the skin, a tiny laboratory

Mar. 19, 2013 ? Humans are veritable chemical factories -- we manufacture thousands of substances and transport them, via our blood, throughout our bodies. Some of these substances can be used as indicators of our health status. A team of EPFL scientists has developed a tiny device that can analyze the concentration of these substances in the blood. Implanted just beneath the skin, it can detect up to five proteins and organic acids simultaneously, and then transmit the results directly to a doctor's computer. This method will allow a much more personalized level of care than traditional blood tests can provide. Health care providers will be better able to monitor patients, particularly those with chronic illness or those undergoing chemotherapy. The prototype, still in the experimental stages, has demonstrated that it can reliably detect several commonly traced substances.

The research results will be published and presented March 20, 2013 in Europe's largest electronics conference, DATE 13.

Three cubic millimeters of technology

The device was developed by a team led by EPFL scientists Giovanni de Micheli and Sandro Carrara. The implant, a real gem of concentrated technology, is only a few cubic millimeters in volume but includes five sensors, a radio transmitter and a power delivery system. Outside the body, a battery patch provides 1/10 watt of power, through the patient's skin -- thus there's no need to operate every time the battery needs changing.

Information is routed through a series of stages, from the patient's body to the doctor's computer screen. The implant emits radio waves over a safe frequency. The patch collects the data and transmits them via Bluetooth to a mobile phone, which then sends them to the doctor over the cellular network.

A system that can detect numerous substances

Great care was taken in developing the sensors. To capture the targeted substance in the body -- such as lactate, glucose, or ATP -- each sensor's surface is covered with an enzyme. "Potentially, we could detect just about anything," explains De Micheli. "But the enzymes have a limited lifespan, and we have to design them to last as long as possible." The enzymes currently being tested are good for about a month and a half; that's already long enough for many applications. "In addition, it's very easy to remove and replace the implant, since it's so small."

The electronics were a considerable challenge as well. "It was not easy to get a system like this to work on just a tenth of a watt," de Micheli explains. The researchers also struggled to design the minuscule electrical coil that receives the power from the patch.

Towards personalized chemotherapy

The implant could be particularly useful in chemotherapy applications. Currently, oncologists use occasional blood tests to evaluate their patients' tolerance to a particular treatment dosage. In these conditions, it is very difficult to administer the optimal dose. De Micheli is convinced his system will be an important step towards better, more personalized medicine. "It will allow direct and continuous monitoring based on a patient's individual tolerance, and not on age and weight charts or weekly blood tests."

In patients with chronic illness, the implants could send alerts even before symptoms emerge, and anticipate the need for medication. "In a general sense, our system has enormous potential in cases where the evolution of a pathology needs to be monitored or the tolerance to a treatment tested."

The prototype has already been tested in the laboratory for five different substances, and proved as reliable as traditional analysis methods. The project brought together eletronics experts, computer scientists, doctors and biologists from EPFL, the Istituto di Ricerca di Bellinzona, EMPA and ETHZ. It is part of the Swiss Nano-Tera program, whose goal is to encourage interdisciplinary research in the environmental and medical fields. Researchers hope the system will be commercially available within 4 years.

How the Vatican's finances work

As Pope Francis assumes leadership of the world's 1.2 billion Catholics, he's got his work cut out for him on many fronts, not the least of which is the Vatican's finances.

Last year, a sheaf of documents was leaked by Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI's former butler in a scandal known as the Vatileaks affair. The documents allegedly showed, for example, tens of millions of dollars in transfers to American dioceses to help pay legal settlements -- estimated to have cost the American church more than $3 billion so far -- surrounding the priest sex-abuse scandals.

During his eight-year tenure, Benedict reportedly made progress toward reforming the Vatican Bank, replacing its president and creating a financial-intelligence committee. But by most accounts, the Vatican Bank still needs greater scrutiny and transparency.

So what is the Vatican Bank, and how is it related to the Catholic Church, and to the finances of Vatican City, a sovereign state? CNBC explains.

What is the Vatican Bank?
It's definitely not your average bank. Officially called the Institute for the Works of Religion, the Vatican Bank is a privately held firm run by a CEO who reports to a committee of cardinals and the Pope. It offers ATMs with transactions in Latin and boasts a small castle-like headquarters protected by Swiss Guards.

It has about 33,000 accounts, a distribution network in more than 100 countries, and an estimated $8 billion in assets. (By contrast, JPMorgan Chase, the largest U.S. bank, has about $2 trillion in assets.)

Details of the account holders are private, though the Vatican says most of the accounts belong to members of the clergy. Because its assets are not the property of the Holy See, it isn't overseen by the Vatican; instead it's considered a charitable foundation affiliated with the Vatican.

What's the controversy about the Vatican Bank?
Where do we begin? It's been controversial for decades, accused of money-laundering and collaborating with the mafia, and before that with the Nazis.

In 1982, the Vatican Bank dealt with its most serious crisis. Roberto Calvi, known as "God's Banker," was found dead, hanging from Blackfriars Bridge in London. At first his death appeared to be a suicide, but eventually five people -- including a mafia member -- were charged with his murder. Calvi was chairman of Banco Ambrosiano, which collapsed after $1.3 billion in loans disappeared; the loans had been made to dummy companies owned by the Vatican Bank, and the Vatican had provided the letters of credit.

More recently, in 2010, the Italian government launched an investigation into the bank's operations after the Bank of Italy alerted police to two suspicious Vatican Bank transactions totaling $30 million. The money was being sent from Credito Artigianato to JP Morgan Chase and another Italian bank, Banca del Fucino. The Vatican Bank apparently didn't disclose the origin of the money, which is a violation of Italian law. Ultimately, the bank denied wrongdoing and the funds were eventually released.

In December 2010, Benedict XVI established the Financial Information Authority as an independent agency to monitor the financial activities of the Vatican Bank and other Vatican-related institutions. Benedict also worked to get the Vatican on to the Organization of Economic Co-operation and Development's "white list" of countries that follow international banking standards.

But the 2012 release of leaked documents ? the Vatileaks affair ? showed the bank was still struggling with corruption, apparently transferring tens of millions of dollars to American dioceses to help them pay child sex-abuse legal bills. There was also a letter from a senior Vatican official, Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano, in which he apparently complained of money-laundering and corruption in the Vatican.

Last May, the bank's president, Ettore Gotti Tedeschi, was ousted by the board of directors, accused of money-laundering and not following laws that block financing terrorists and criminal gangs. Tedeschi countered, saying he was fired for getting "too close to the truth."

In January, Italy stopped allowing its banks to do business with the Holy See because of the Vatican Bank's lack of financial transparency. As a result, the Italian banks cut off credit-card processing at tourist spots such as the Sistine Chapel. Some weeks later, plastic was restored after a Swiss firm that doesn't have to abide by EU banking laws came to the rescue.

Then, just before he abdicated the papacy in February, Benedict appointed a new Vatican Bank president, Ernst von Freyberg, a German-born lawyer.

How does this mess impact Pope Francis?
The cardinals will expect Francis to clean up the scandal and modernize the church's finances. If he doesn't, the Vatican could possibly have no access to the global banking system. That situation would undermine its moral authority and its financial stability.

But it won't be easy, because the Vatican hierarchy is divided into various factions. Some want the church's finances to be more transparent to the faithful and the banking world; others want to keep the church's tradition of secrecy.

Related: What Pope Francis can teach CEOs about leadership

So how is the Vatican Bank's finances different from the Catholic Church's?
The church in this context is called the Holy See, which includes the offices of the Roman Curia (the church bureaucracy that makes the wheels turn) and its communications outlets.

In 2011, the Holy See brought in $308 million in revenue, with $326 million in expenditures, for a deficit of about $18 million, according to Catholic News Service.

The budget of the Holy See includes the Vatican Secretariat of State and its diplomatic missions around the world, Vatican councils, the Holy See's investment portfolio and properties, plus the Vatican's newspaper, radio, publishing house and television production.

Most of the Holy See's expenditures were related to personnel costs for about 2,800 employees.

Its revenues included about $61 million from the Vatican bank, which donates its investment profits, contributions from dioceses and religious orders, and financial investment returns.

The United States, Germany and Italy give the biggest contributions every year, according to the Vatican.

How are the Vatican Bank's finances and the Catholic Church's finances different from Vatican City's finances?
Vatican City has its own economy supported by contributions from Roman Catholics around the world, and the sale of postage stamps, tourist fees and mementos.

In 2011, Vatican City's revenues were $113 million, with a surplus of about $27 million, according to Catholic News Service.

Since 2002, its currency has been the euro.

Venezuela election rivals clash over crime

By Daniel Wallis

CARACAS (Reuters) - Moments after he registered to run in Venezuela's April 14 election, acting President Nicolas Maduro vowed to go on foot, unarmed, into the toughest slums of Caracas and ask the gangs there to lay down their guns.

Maduro and his opponent, Henrique Capriles, have clashed over a top campaign issue: the daily murders, armed robberies and kidnappings that make the South American country one of the most dangerous in the world.

"We'll go like this, with our chests bare!" Maduro cried at the campaign event, driving the crowd wild as he pulled open his Venezuelan-flag tracksuit top to reveal a red T-shirt emblazoned with the eyes of his late boss, Hugo Chavez.

"We'll go without fear, to tell these youths to stop the killing, to give up the guns, to come to Christ the Redeemer!"

Fears about personal safety routinely top polls of voters' concerns in the country with the world's biggest oil reserves - despite the many programs started by Chavez during his 14-year rule aimed at bringing down the homicide figures.

In a report last week, the U.N. Development Program said that only Honduras, El Salvador, Ivory Coast and Jamaica had worse rates than Venezuela's 45.1 murders per 100,000 people. The rate in the United States was 4.2.

The Venezuelan government concedes the country suffers more violent crime than most of the region. But it accuses opposition politicians of exaggerating the problem and shamelessly stoking fears to tarnish Chavez's socialist "revolution."

On Sunday, Maduro accused the U.S. Department of Defense and Central Intelligence Agency of plotting to assassinate Capriles and blame it on the government to cause chaos and trigger a coup ahead of the vote. Washington categorically denied it.

The opposition candidate, a 40-year-old centrist state governor who accuses Maduro of exploiting the emotion over Chavez's March 5 death in an effort to win the election, kicked off a provincial tour over the weekend.

Capriles calls Maduro a poor imitation of Chavez and mocked his performance outside the electoral authority offices.

"Do you think Nicolas is going to solve the violence problem? It's not opening your jacket and saying 'I'm Superman and I'm going to go I don't know where,'" Capriles said.

"I'd like to leave my house at 11, 12 o'clock in the night, for my children to be able to go out and me not to be terrified. Can we do that today? Can we live like that? No."

WEAK JUSTICE SYSTEM

At the root of the country's crime problem, experts say, is a proliferation of firearms and drugs, and a weak justice system that means the majority of offenses go unpunished.

Among a spate of attacks on prominent victims, a U.S. Major League baseball player and diplomats from Mexico, Chile, Belarus and Costa Rica have been abducted in recent months.

So-called express kidnappings, where targets are dragged off city streets or from their cars and taken to cash machines, or held for a few hours until a ransom is paid, are common.

The government says there were 16,000 homicides nationwide last year, but non-governmental organizations put the figure much higher. The Venezuelan Violence Observatory said its conservative estimate for 2012 was more than 21,000 murders.

Without detailed statistics from the authorities, it is not possible to crosscheck the numbers.

Stung by allegations that the situation is out of control, Chavez's administration revamped the main investigative police unit last year, created several new public safety bodies, and said it cut the homicide rate in Caracas by 10 percent.

Most afflicted by the gangs of criminals are poor residents living in the myriad shantytowns where the late president found his most fervent followers.

Voters seldom held Chavez personally responsible for the high crime rate. Some viewed him almost as a member of the family, others in near-religious terms. Maduro is trying to forge the same emotional bond, but lacks Chavez's charisma.

On Sunday, he inaugurated a new sports facility in the capital's gritty Petare barrio, briefly taking to the court to play basketball with a group of youths. There were wild cheers when he made a basket on his third attempt.

The acting president, who appeared to have visited the neighborhood with the normal level of security and bodyguards that he normally would, blames violent crime on a decadent legacy left behind by capitalist governments in the OPEC nation.

"They've given us these values from birth through narco-TV shows, fashion linked subliminally to drug consumption, fashion linked to pistols, and the cults of guns and of criminal gangs," he said after he registered his candidacy for the presidency.

He accuses the opposition of cynically allowing bandits to roam unchecked - for example, in Miranda state, which includes poor parts of Caracas and where Capriles is governor.

"You know why?" Maduro said to the crowd. "Because they don't care about people's lives. They prefer barrios that are full of drugs and criminality so they can continue stigmatizing the people like they have done for the last 500 years."

Sony Xperia L: a budget Android device with a focus on imaging and style

DNP Sony Xperia L

The days of the new Sony Mobile are now long past. Two years in, and the company appears to have hit a stride with its smartphone portfolio, churning out new Xperias on a consistent basis. And today is no different with the unveiling of the Xperia L, a mid- to low-end effort that places a heavy emphasis on the camera experience. Carrying on the Arc's legacy, this 4.3-inch handset packs an FWVGA display, dual-core 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4, 1,700mAh battery, 8GB of internal storage (expandable via microSD), NFC and an 8-megapixel rear shooter with Exmor RS sensor into a conspicuously curved body rounded off with that signature Xperia power key.

Though it lacks the greater resolution and screen size of its 720p sibling the SP, this more budget-friendly device does enjoy an exclusive perk: HDR stills and video. A feature Sony's included to make the L an attractive point-and-shoot option for budget-minded consumers concerned with style points and not LTE or raw performance. Unsurprisingly, it comes pre-loaded with a trio of Sony's own media apps -- Walkman, Movies and Album -- a precedent it set at IFA last year.

Kenyatta lawyers push international court to drop case

By Sara Webb and Thomas Escritt

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - Lawyers for Kenya's president-elect, Uhuru Kenyatta, will push the International Criminal Court on Monday to drop charges against him after the case against his co-accused collapsed.

The case against Kenyatta, on charges of crimes against humanity over bloodshed in the aftermath of Kenya's 2007 election, has been further complicated by his victory in a ballot which was held largely peacefully this month.

The case is also an important test for the court, which was set up more than a decade ago as the world's first permanent war crimes tribunal but has only secured one conviction.

Kenyatta and former civil servant Francis Muthaura were among six suspects initially charged by ICC prosecutors with orchestrating violence after the 2007 election, when some 1,200 people were killed.

But on March 11, prosecutor Fatou Bensouda said the decision of a key witness to recant testimony forced her to drop charges against Muthaura. She said that would have no impact on Kenyatta's case, which was closely linked.

The status conference, or pre-trial hearing, was called by the judges in The Hague at 3 p.m. (10:00 a.m. EST) to look at the consequences of the withdrawal of the charges against Muthaura for the case against Kenyatta.

Kenyatta's lawyers will call for the case against him to be dropped or at least postponed, said one lawyer who was familiar with the case but did not want to be quoted by name.

"The collapse of the case against Muthaura has a profound impact on the viability of the prosecution's case against Kenyatta," the lawyer said.

The prosecutions are based on a lot of the same evidence. Both men have always denied any wrongdoing.

Kenyatta, elected by a slim margin, faces a big challenge in bridging Kenya's ethnic divides even without the court case. His opponent, defeated presidential contender Raila Odinga, challenged the election result in court on Saturday, alleging widespread ballot rigging.

Prosecutors could be expected to resist any moves to drop the charges against Kenyatta, which were brought by Bensouda's predecessor.

However, lawyers for Kenyatta could also say the prosecution case has changed so much in the past year that the case should be moved back to the pre-trial "confirmation of charges" phase.

The prosecution would then have to show again that it has a strong enough case to go to trial.

Kenyatta's lawyers have argued that so much information was disclosed by prosecutors at the last minute that the case is fundamentally different from the one judges initially approved.

Judges have not yet formally dropped the case against Muthaura.

4 reasons not to upgrade to Samsung's Galaxy S 4

After months of anticipation, Samsung finally unveiled its new flagship for 2013: the Galaxy S 4, available at the end of April. The Galaxy S3?s successor will come packed with a 1.9-GHz quad-core Qualcomm 600 processor for U.S. models, a 5-inch Super AMOLED 1080p display and a host of new gesture-based features. But if you own a Galaxy S III, there are some reasons to sit this upgrade out.

No, Samsung?s third-gen Galaxy S phone doesn?t follow your eyes for pausing video, and you can?t use both cameras at the same time, but is upgrading to the S 4 really worth the price? Here are four reasons you should reconsider rushing out to buy Samsung?s ?Next Big Thing.?

1. The design isn?t much different

Samsung has made a few subtle aesthetic alterations to the Galaxy S 4, but it still looks nearly identical to the Galaxy S III. The new flagship comes with the same soft rounded edges and plastic frame that you?ll find on the S III, but with a slightly slimmer and lighter chassis and slightly larger screen.

The S 4 is 0.31 inches thin, marking a 0.4-inch difference from the 0.35-inch S III. It also comes with a larger 5-inch screen compared to the S III?s 4.8-inch display. You?ll be able to feel and see these differences when the phone is in your hand, but don?t expect a dramatic overhaul in terms of design.

More: Samsung Galaxy S4 benchmarked: Serious power, dim display

2. The Galaxy S4?s software is coming to the Galaxy S III

Over the past year Samsung has made an effort to create a seamless user experience across all Galaxy flagships. For example, at the end of 2012 the Galaxy Note 2?s multi-window feature landed on the Galaxy S III, and we can expect a similar pattern with the S 4?s features.

Nick DiCarlo, Samsung?s vice president of portfolio planning, told PCMag that ?anything we can do that?s not dependent on hardware like infrared, we?ll definitely bring to all the flagship devices.? This means that the S 4?s camera improvements aren?t likely to make it to the S III, but other additions such as S Health, S Translator and Group Play could be available on the S III in the future.

Plus, you can enjoy a handful of the S 4?s new features via apps in the Google Play store. For example, the free runtastic Pro app uses GPS to track your movements and how many calories you?ve burned, just like S Health. Additionally, cable providers such as Time Warner offer apps that pair your smartphone with your cable box so it functions as a remote control, similar to the S 4?s WatchOn feature.

3. You?re not getting Samsung?s fastest processor

Samsung will be launching two versions of its Galaxy S 4. The U.S. version will feature a 1.9-GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor, while the international edition will get Samsung?s 1.6-GHz octa-core Exynos chipset. While this is still an upgrade from the Galaxy S III?s 1.5-GHz dual-core CPU, overseas buyers will be getting 8 cores. There?s a reason why you can?t get Samsung?s own latest and greatest CPU ? it doesn?t support integrated 4G LTE ? but that doesn?t mean we have to like it.

More: Galaxy S 4 vs. the world: Specs compared

4. The screen isn't much brighter

We had the chance to measure the brightness of the Galaxy S 4?s display, and the results weren?t impressive. The S 4?s 5-inch Super AMOLED screen registered at 258 lux, which is brighter than the S III?s 213 lux display, but way below the 299 lux category average. By comparison, the HTC One registered 463 lux on our light meter, and the iPhone 5 got 525 lux.

Bottom line
The Galaxy S 4 will undoubtedly be one of the best-selling smartphones of 2013, but it?s important not to get lost in Samsung?s promotional hype. The S 4 comes with the types of innovations that have pushed Samsung to sell 100 million Galaxy S handsets worldwide, but take a look at what you?re really getting for your money before you decide if this device is right for you.

Steubenville High School Football Players Found Guilty of Rape

Steubenville High School Football Players Found Guilty of RapeThe two Steubenville high-school football players who stood trial this week on rape charges were found guilty this morning.

The trial, which divided a small Ohio town and uncovered a history of adults associated with the football program protecting players from prosecution, came to a close Sunday morning as Trent Mays and Ma'lik Richmond were found delinquent by the juvenile court, which was decided by a sole judge and not a jury. The two boys will be jailed a minimum of one year, and now face a possible sentence of juvenile jail until they turn 21.

Details of the rape of the 16-year-old West Virginia girl spread through social media the morning after an August 11th party where Mays was seen leaving with the intoxicated girl. A series of texts and tweets from phones confiscated by the state were used as evidence against the defendants. A photo of the unconscious girl being carried by undisclosed males surfaced online months after the assault.

The Ohio Attorney General will announce later today whether additional charges will be brought in the case, including against other boys at the party.

Steubenville football players found guilty of rape

STEUBENVILLE (AP) - Two Ohio high school football players who were found guilty of raping a drunken 16-year-old girl have been sentenced to at least one year in juvenile jail.

Steubenville High School students Trent Mays and Ma'Lik Richmond were found guilty today of attacking the girl after an alcohol-fueled party last August. The case roiled the small city and stirred reaction from activists online.

The judge sentenced them both to at least one year in juvenile jail and said both can be held until they're 21. Mays, who's 17, was sentenced to an additional year in jail on a charge of illegal use of a minor in nudity-oriented material, to be served after his rape sentence is completed.

Both Mays and the 16-year-old Richmond have been ordered to avoid contact with the victim until they're 21.

Afghanistan's biggest-ever truck bomb defused in Kabul: spy agency

By Mirwais Harooni

KABUL (Reuters) - Security forces in the Afghan capital have defused a truck bomb packed with nearly eight tonnes of explosives, the biggest of its kind discovered in the country, the spy agency said on Friday amid heightened security.

Intelligence forces discovered the explosives in eastern Kabul, wired and ready for detonation, security officials said. Five al-Qaeda linked Haqqani network insurgents were killed in a resulting firefight.

"This truck bomb could have destroyed an area around 1.5 km (in radius). Now can you imagine that what kind of catastrophe this would be?," Shafiqullah Tahiri, a spokesman for the National Directorate of Security, told a news conference.

It contained sodium chloride, ammonium nitrate, other chemicals and some diesel.

After more than 11 years of war, insurgents are still able to strike strategic military targets and launch high-profile attacks in Kabul and elsewhere.

The truck bomb was discovered on Wednesday two days after U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel left the capital. On the first full day of Hagel's visit, a suicide bomber struck about a kilometer away from his morning meetings at a NATO facility.

Two Haqqani operatives were arrested during the night raid, and Tahiri said the militants had been planning to target a military facility in the capital. There are several foreign and Afghan military bases in Kabul, housing thousands of soldiers.

The Haqqani network is widely regarded as the most dangerous U.S. foe in Afghanistan.

Afghanistan is bracing for the start of the spring fighting season, and officials fear that militants will infiltrate the capital as the snow melts in the mountains to the east where they hide.

A number of insurgent groups, including the Taliban, the Haqqani network and Hizb-i-Islami, led by Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, are known to reside in restive Wardak province just 40 minutes drive from Kabul.

Afghan officials told Reuters this week they were worried that the Afghan capital would be in danger after President Hamid Karzai ordered U.S. special forces tasked with fighting the Taliban to leave Wardak.

U.S. special forces are expected to play a major role after most NATO combat troops withdraw by the end of 2014, and Karzai's decision could complicate negotiations between the United States and Afghanistan over the scope of U.S. operations after the pull-out.

International forces in Afghanistan have also been warned the that recent inflammatory remarks by Karzai have put them at risk, NATO commander General Joseph Dunford said in an email obtained by the New York Times this week.

Karzai accused the United States of colluding with the Taliban hours before the two met last Sunday. His remarks, which have been rejected by Washington, highlight an often tense relationship with the United States.
