Bots of Burden: U.S. Army Recruiting an Array of Animal-Inspired Robots to Assist Battlefield Troops [Video]

robot, combatNEW RECRUITS: Boston Dynamics is developing a number of robots to assist the military, including (clockwise, from the top left) the Sand Flea, Cheetah and RHex. Image: Images courtesy of Boston Dynamics

Three of the U.S. military's newest recruits reported for duty this week at the Army Test and Evaluation Command. These troops are different from normal soldiers in several ways?for starters, each has six feet. And they are robots designed to look and move like cockroaches. Aside from those details, the Army is hoping its new Boston Robotics RHex bots will soon join grunts in Afghanistan.

RHex furthers the U.S. military's ongoing efforts to deploy aerial drones and land robots to assist troops in the field. Weighing 13.5 kilograms, the camera-equipped RHex is designed to be carried in a backpack until it is needed to provide reconnaissance in rough terrain areas such as rocky inclines, riverbanks, mud and loose sandy soil. A fully charged robot can operate via remote control for six hours at a distance of up to 600 meters from its controller.

The key to RHex's mobility is the shape of its feet, which resemble apostrophes and swing in circles, slapping the ground to propel the bot forward (see video). The feet can also serve as paddles in water. RHex moves much like a similar, four-legged robot developed a few years ago by a team of Georgia Institute of Technology, Northwestern University, and University of Pennsylvania researchers.

The Army Rapid Equipping Force plans to deliver four RHex robots for testing in Afghanistan once safety evaluations are completed stateside. These bots could be joined shortly by nine Boston Dynamics so-called Sand Flea reconnaissance robots, expected to undergo similar tests later this year. Sand Flea is a four-wheel, five-kilogram dynamo that drives like a remote-control car on flat surfaces but can jump as high as nine meters to overcome obstacles (see video). The robot, which can pop up about 25 times on a single charge, uses gyro stabilization to stay level while airborne both to provide clear recon from its onboard camera and to ensure a smooth landing. Earlier versions of Sand Flea were developed by Sandia National Laboratories with funding from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and the Army's Joint Improvised Explosive Device Defeat Organization (JIEDDO).

Boston Dynamics has several other robots in the works for the military, including its Legged Squad Support System (LS3) and a fleet-footed newcomer called Cheetah that can run nearly 30 kilometers per hour, breaking the 21 kph land speed record for legged robots set in 1989 at the Leg Laboratory, part of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab.

Like its namesake in the animal kingdom, the mechanized Cheetah increases its stride and running speed by flexing and un-flexing its metallic spine on every step. The Cheetah is confined to a laboratory treadmill for now because it is connected to a hydraulic pump for power and tethered to a boomlike device overhead to keep it running in the center of the mill. Boston Dynamics designed the treadmill to move at speeds up to more than 80 kph?child's play for a real cheetah, which can run upward of 120 kph, faster than any other land animal.

It is too early to tell exactly when Cheetah, (or Sand Flea and RHex, for that matter) might see action alongside troops and how it will be utilized, but one idea is to use it as a robotic scout that can move swiftly through rougher terrain than today's wheeled or tracked robots.

DARPA, sponsoring Boston Dynamics's Cheetah work through its Maximum Mobility and Manipulation (M3) program, hopes to see a free-running prototype by the end of the year.

Right now Cheetah is more of a basic research project than a program with a specific mission, says Boston Dynamics founder Marc Raibert. "The emphasis is on getting fundamental results that could have broad impact in advancing robotics," he adds. "Indeed, work on the Cheetah robot has already forced us to rethink how a back works in locomotion to increase running speed, and to create better models for the measurement and exchange of momentum in legged locomotion."

Relationships Lost ? Poly in Love

Sometimes, no matter how much you wish a relationship could work, it just doesn?t? no matter how much you like someone. Sometimes two people just want different things.

This is basically the realization my partner and I came to last night.?It was our second attempt at trying to make?this relationship?work and it just doesn?t. I value our friendship, but we want very different things out of a relationship and that?s ok, at least we were able to recognize it and talk about it honestly. My hope is that we can still remain friends, but I had to take away the romantic/sexual elements. I couldn?t see us being able to stay?friends if things continued on as usual between us.

My relationship with this partner wasn?t a ?failure? as far as I?m concerned. For the most part I think we were pretty happy together but it?s really never been anything other than a casual friendship with benefits for either of us. The bottom line is that I would have liked there to have been more but?the romantic connection wasn?t?there.

I know there are going to be people thinking ?does it have to be there?? Well, yes, on some level. At least for me. I?ve never really been good at casual relationships. Whatever relationships are, they are never ?casual.? I develop very deep bonds with my partners and it hurts when they don?t feel the same but you?can?t force a connection. I would rather have the friendship in tact and lose the romantic aspects than continue the romantic part of the?relationship, continue to feel let down, and then wind up losing the friendship in the end.

Another way that one could know if the rental product is headed for home foreclosure is by on a regular basis examining entries. These foreclosure item listings are easy to locate online. Properties the foreclosure should also be detailed and be readily available for viewing in your local town, town, as well as village offices. Although you may want to refrain from outright requesting your property manager if he or she will be facing foreclosure, particularly if no symptoms are showing, it may help to calm your own fears.

Even when your building has been foreclosed in, you may not always have to start packaging your hand bags. Some states help it become so that your rent trumps the particular foreclosure. This safety often occurs when a new operator is unable to afford their mortgage. For example, can be your one or two year lease with all the previous proprietors? If you applied for the hire agreement prior to the mortgage involved was acquired, the buyer in the foreclosed house may have to honor your hire.

Renters are also provided with handful of foreclosure security when they rent from a lease stabilized product or when they are a part of a new federal housing program. In numerous states, those on Section 7 cannot be kicked out from the local rental unit without reasonable cause, even when possession is transferred. Some states and native governments in addition state that home foreclosure is not a suitable reason for you to evict those in lease stabilized real estate units. Since these kinds of exemptions vary depending on nearby and state government authorities, be sure to examine this information before hand.

Although you may get offers for some defense as a renter, the new who owns your property might have other plans. In most places, this is not something just occurs overnight, which means you should have a number of notice. Until that time arrives, you shouldn?t have your current locked changed, have your current belongings relocated from the office space or have your tools shut off. In case this does come about, contact the authorities as well as a lawyer. In the event your ammenities are shut off, the health department can and should be informed.

Another issue that renter?s have, concerning foreclosure evictions, is their security down payment. Since most hire properties need the payment of the security down payment, those expected to move unexpectedly are often remaining in a crunch. In all integrity, it doesn?t make any difference how well clean up or maintained you retained the hire unit, you could have difficulty retrieving your stability deposit. New proprietors are often exempt lawfully from paying it. You can sue the first sort owner, your current last property owner, but this method can be frustrating and costly.

As you can tell, you do have several options when living on the street, as a renter. The Idea Factory: Insights on Creativity from Bell Labs and the ...

28 MARCH, 2012 by Michelle Legro

Successful innovation requires the meeting of the right people at the right place with just the right problem.

At the turn of the twentieth century, Thomas Edison was the most famous inventor in the world. He hoarded useful materials, from rare metals to animal bones, and through careful, methodical testing, he made his new inventions work, and previous inventions work better. Churning out patent after patent, Edison?s particular form of innovation was about the what, and not about the how ? the latter he could outsource and hire for.

?In 1910, few Americans knew the difference between a scientist, an engineer, and an inventor? explains Jon Gertner at the beginning of his lively book about a place that fostered a home for all three, The Idea Factory: Bell Labs and the Great Age of American Innovation. The difference was clear to Edison, who was generally disinterested in the theory behind his inventions, filling his Menlo Park complex with specialists to do the work he?d rather not. ?I can always hire mathematicians,? he said, ?but they can?t hire me.?

At Menlo Park, Edison hired scientists to do the theoretical work so that he could concentrate on testing his inventions.

To be an inventor, Gertner insists, one needed ?mainly mechanical skill and ingenuity, not scientific knowledge and training.? (Qualities that the ingenious Hedy Lamarr had alongside her mechanical partner George Antheil, an unlikely artistic pair who invented an essential frequency-hopping radio signal during World War II that later gave us technologies like Bluetooth and wifi.) For more than sixty years, from the 1920s to the 1980s, Bell Labs would bring together all of the above to create essential inventions of the twentieth century: the transistor, radar, the laser, communication satellites, UNIX, and the C++ programming language.

Adventure stories about 'wireless boys' and 'radio boys' were popular around the turn of the century.

It was the child-tinkerers during the first decades of the century who would populate Bell Labs during its explosive growth in the 30s and 40s. Adventure books recounted tales of ?Wireless Boys? (or ?Radio Boys?) who solved dastardly crimes and helped those in need, all by building their own wireless telegraphs at home. ?Wireless is a thrilling pastime!,? exclaims the author of one of these books:

To be a wireless boy and make your own apparatus is to have the kind of stuff in you of which successful men are made ? men who, if they were shipwrecked on a desert isle at daybreak, would have something to eat by noon, a spring bed to sleep on by night and a wireless station the next day sending out an SOS to ships below the horizon, for help.

Around this time, Alexander Graham Bell?s American Telephone and Telegraph Company (AT&T) had a massive, government-sanctioned monopoly on all telephone subscriptions, buying regional phone companies, single-handedly manufacturing all of the parts for all of the cables, switches, repeaters, and vacuum-tubes. AT&T made the phones work, it made the parts that made the phones work, and it hired scientists and engineers to make the phones work better. During the 1920s, this third arm is what became Bell Labs.

In the beginning, Bell Labs was populated with grown-up wireless boys ? physics, engineering, and chemistry grad students and junior professors seduced away from colleges with astronomically better pay. The new recruits were required to climb telephone poles, operate a switchboard, and sign a paper that sold all rights to any future patents to AT&T for a dollar.

The Picturephone, from the 1964 New York World's Fair (AT&T Archives and History Center)

Bell Labs was a place for discovery, which wasn?t always profitable, and invention, which usually was. During World War II, the US government invested $2 billion into the development of the atomic bomb, but they invested around $3 billion in the development of radar, much of which took place at Bell Labs. (?Scientists who worked on radar often quipped that radar won the war,? Gertner writes, ? whereas the atomic bomb merely ended it.?)

In 1961, Bell Labs moved to a campus designed by Eero Saarinen. It was sold by the company in 2006.

During the post-war reorganization of the Labs, older management was demoted, younger management given new titles, and, most importantly, every research group was interdisciplinary: chemists mingled with physicists who chatted with metallurgists who lunched with engineers. Every building in the New Jersey campus was interconnected and no one was allowed to shut their door. This was the beginning of a newly innovative time, but not the same ?genius?-driven Eureka! moments that seemingly characterized the work of Edison. Gertner writes:

At the start, forces that precede an invention merely begin to align, often imperceptibly, as a group of people and ideas converge, until over the course of months or years (or decades) they gain clarity and momentum and the help of additional ideas and actors. Luck seems to matter, and so does timing, for it tends to be the case that the right answers, the right people, the right place ? perhaps all three ? require a serendipitous encounter with the right problem. And then ? sometimes ? a leap. Only in retrospect do leaps look obvious.

(?Chance favors the connected mind,? Steven Johnson famously observed in his own exploration of how innovation happens.)

The story of The Idea Factory is one of individuals, architecture, millions of tiny moving parts, deliberate work, and, of course, luck and timing. It was a culture of creativity that worked for its age, impossible to reproduce in quite the same way, nor would we want to. Today, we might subscribe to the philosophy that ?creativity is just connecting things,? as Steve Jobs once said about his own idea factory, but first someone has to test, apply, develop, and manufacture all of those connectors.

Why Healthcare Is Different | The Health Care Blog

Working in the health care space has forced me to give up many hopes and expectations that I had a few years ago. Forgive me for being cynical (it?s an easy feeling to have following the country?s largest health IT conference, as I reported a month ago), and indeed some positive trends do step in to shore up hope. I?ll go over the redeeming factors after listing the five tough lessons.

1. The health care field will not adopt a Silicon Valley mentality

Wild, willful, ego-driven experimentation?a zeal for throwing money after intriguing ideas with minimal business plans?has seemed work for the computer field, and much of the world is trying to adopt a ?California optimism.? A lot of venture capitalists and technology fans deem this attitude the way to redeem health care from its morass of expensive solutions that don?t lead to cures. But it won?t happen, at least not the way they paint it.

Health care is one of the most regulated fields in public life, and we want it that way. From the moment we walk into a health facility, we expect the staff to be following rigorous policies to avoid infections. (They don?t, but we expect them to.) And not just anybody can set up a shield outside the door and call themselves a doctor. In the nineteenth century it was easier, but we don?t consider that a golden age of medicine.

Instead, doctors go through some of the longest and most demanding training that exists in the world today. And even after they?re licensed, they have to regularly sign up for continuing education to keep practicing. Other fields in medicine are similar. The whole industry is constrained by endless requirements that make sure the insiders remain in their seats and no ?disruptive technologies? raise surprises. Just ask a legal expert about the complex mesh of Federal and state regulations that a health care provider has to navigate to protect patient privacy?and you do want your medical records to be private, don?t you??before you rave about the Silicon Valley mentality. Also read the O?Reilly book by Fred Trotter and David Uhlman about the health care system as it really is.

Nor can patients change treatments with the ease of closing down a Facebook account. Once a patient has established a trust relationship with a doctor and obtained a treatment plan, he or she won?t say, ?I think I?ll go down the road to another center that charges $100 less for this procedure.? And indeed, health reform doesn?t prosper from breaking down treatments into individual chunks. Progress lies in the opposite direction: the redemptive potential of long-term relationships.

2. Regulations can?t force change

I am very impressed with the HITECH act (a product of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, more than the Affordable Care Act) that set modern health reform in motion, as well as the efforts of the Department of Health and Human Services to push institutions forward. But change in health care, like education, boils down to the interaction in a room between a professional and a client. Just as lesson plans and tests can?t ensure that a teacher inspires a child to learn, regulations can?t keep a doctor from ordering an unnecessary test to placate an anxious patient.

We can offer clinical decision support to suggest what has worked for other patients, but we can?t keep a patient from asking for a expensive procedure that has a 10% chance of making him better (and a 20% chance of making him worse), nor can we make the moral decision about what treatment to pursue, for the patient or the doctor. Each patient is different, anyway. No one wants to be a statistic.

3. The insurance companies are not the locus of cost and treatment problems

Health insurers are a favorite target of hatred by Americans, exemplified by Michael Moore?s 2007 movie Sicko and more surprisingly in the 1997 romantic comedy As Good as it Gets, where I saw an audience applaud as Helen Hunt delivered a rant against health maintenance organizations. A lot of activists, looking at other countries, declare that our problems would be solved (well, would improve a lot) if we got private insurers out of the picture.

Sure, there?s a lot of waste in the current insurance system, which deliberately stretches out the task of payment and makes it take up the days of full-time staff in each doctor?s office. But that?s not the cause of the main problems in either costs or treatment failures. The problems lie with the beloved treatment staff. We can respect their hard work and the lives they save, but we don?t have to respect them for releasing patients from hospitals without adequate follow-up, or for ordering unnecessary radiation that creates harm for patients, or for the preventable errors that still (after years of publicity) kill 90,000 to 100,000 patients a year.

4. Doctors don?t want to be care managers

The premise of health reform is to integrate patients into a larger plan for managing a population. A doctor is supposed to manage a case load and keep his or her pipeline full while not spending too much. The thrust of various remuneration schemes, old and new, that go beyond fee for service (capitation, global payment systems) is to reward a doctor for handling patients of a particular type (for instance, elderly people with hypertension) at a particular cost. But doctors aren?t trained for this. They want to fix the immediate, presenting complaint and send the patient home until they?re needed again. Some think longitudinally, and diligently try to treat the whole person rather than a symptom. But managing their treatment options as a finite resource is just not in their skill set.

The United Kingdom?host of one of the world?s great national care systems?is about to launch a bold new program where doctors have to do case management. The doctors are rebelling. If this is the future of medicine, we?ll have to find new medical personnel to do it.

5. Patients don?t want to be care managers

Now that the medical field has responded superbly to acute health problems, we are left with long-term problems that require lifestyle and environmental changes. The patient is even more important than the doctor in these modern ills. But the patients who cost the most and need to make the most far-ranging changes are demonstrating an immunity to good advice. They didn?t get emphysema or Type 2 diabetes by acting healthily in the first place, and they aren?t about to climb out of their condition voluntarily either.

You know what the problem with chronic disease is? Its worst effects are not likely to show up early in life when lifestyle change could make the most difference. (Serious pain can come quickly from some chronic illnesses, such as asthma and Crohn?s disease, but these are also hard to fix through lifestyle changes, if by ?lifestyle change? you mean breathing clean air.) The changes a patient would have to make to prevent smoking-related lung disease or obesity-related problems would require a piercing re-evaluation of his course of life, which few can do. And incidentally, they are neither motivated nor trained to store their own personal health records.

Hope for the future

Despite the disappointments I?ve undergone in learning about health care, I expect the system to change for the better. It has to, because the public just won?t tolerate more precipitous price hikes and sub-standard care.

There?s a paucity of citations in my five lessons because they tend not to be laid out bluntly in research or opinion pieces; for the most part, they emerged gradually over many hallway conversations I had. Each of the five lessons contain a ?not,? indicating that they attack common myths. Myths (in the traditional sense) in fact are very useful constructs, because they organize the understanding of the world that societies have trouble articulating in other ways. We can realize that myths are historically inaccurate while finding positive steps forward in them.

The Silicon Valley mentality will have some effect through new devices and mobile phone apps that promote healthy activity. They can help with everything from basic compliance?remembering to take prescribed meds?to promoting fitness crazes and keeping disabled people in their homes. Lectures given once in a year in the doctor?s office don?t lead to deep personal change, but having a helper nearby (even a digital one) can impel a person to act better, hour by hour and day by day. This has been proven by psychologists over and over: motivation is best delivered in small, regular doses (a theme found in my posting from HIMSS).

Because the most needy patients are often the most recalcitrant ones, personal responsibility has to intersect with professional guidance. A doctor has to work the patient, and other staff can shore up good habits as well. This requires the doctors? electronic record systems to accept patient data, such as weight and mood. Projects such as Indivo X support these enhancements, which traditional electronic record systems are ill-prepared for.

Although doctors eschew case management, there are plenty of other professionals who can help them with it, and forming Accountable Care Organizations gives the treatment staff access to such help. Tons of potential savings lie in the data that clinicians could collect and aggregate. Still more data is being loaded by the federal government regularly at Health.Data.Gov. ACOs and other large institutions can hire people who love to crunch big data (if such staff can be found, because they?re in extremely high demand now in almost every industry) to create systems that slide seamlessly into clinical decision support and provide guidelines for better treatment, as well as handle the clinic?s logistics better. So what we need to do is train a lot more experts in big data to understand the health care field and crunch its numbers.

Change will be disruptive, and will not be welcomed with open arms. Those who want a better system need to look at the areas where change is most likely to make a difference.

8 ways to create the workplace employees want ? Business ...

As businesses make their slow transition from layoff mode to hiring, they may find that job-seekers have changed their definition?and expectations?of employee benefits.

Along with health insurance and other traditional benefits, employees are beginning to demand everything from more comfortable work spaces to em??ployer practices that nurture the psychological well-being of the workforce.

A report by food services and consulting giant Sodexo has identified eight workplace trends?including a few you might not have considered?that offer a glimpse at the personal and professional benefits that could become standard fare at organizations that aim to recruit, retain and engage today?s best job candidates.

1. Diversity pays

The most diverse businesses have the largest pool of job candidates to choose from. The Sodexo report notes that several studies have linked gender diversity?especially when women are in top management positions?with better financial performance.

2. Intangibles are real

Employees want flexibility, recognition for a job well done and decision-making authority almost as much as they want money. Simple perks like the opportunity to attend a conference or join an important committee can make an employee happier, more loyal and more eager to please.

Tip: Don?t rely on money alone to prompt desired behavior. Encourage managers to discover what is important to each of their employees, and use that knowledge to craft nonmonetary ?bonuses? that employees will work hard to earn.

3. Well-being is essential

Research shows a link between employee well-being and performance. Effective organizations have cultures that en??courage trust, openness, fairness and respect among employees, and between bosses and workers. They work to in??crease employee involvement, invest in employees? health and safety, offer development opportunities, promote work/life balance and recognize em??ployees? contributions.

Tip: Broaden your definition of employee health to include mental health and overall well-being. Seek benefits that reflect that ethos.

4. Pay for productivity rising

It?s replacing pay for hours worked. That?s crucial when employees work remotely, where bosses can?t easily supervise them. Aligning the reality of a virtual workforce with the business objectives of the firm is a huge challenge for HR pros?and for the man?agers whose employees work off site.

Tip: Train your managers how to engage, motivate and incorporate teleworkers into the team.

5. A good environment is vital

Employees often judge an employer?s commitment to employees by the quality of the work space. The message to staff is, ?You?re on your own? if you put off repairs or don?t offer a break room with basic amenities like a coffee pot and refrigerator. (In-house cafeterias and gyms are strictly optional.)

Tip: Consider the first impression your workplace makes on a prospective employee.? A building that is too hot or cold or that looks shabby can leave the would-be new hire with the perception that your company doesn?t care about its employees.

6. Design drives productivity

Good work-space design reflects the kind of work to be done, allowing for collaboration, social interaction, privacy, quiet and supervision.

Tip: When you design or redesign the areas where your employees work, get employees involved. Have architects and designers meet with employees at every level to talk about how they work and what they need and expect from their work spaces.

7. Flexibility is mainstream

It?s no longer a special program for working moms. Flex improves productivity and employee engagement and lowers turnover. It?s so engrained in many corporate cultures that they don?t consider it an employee benefit anymore. It?s just a normal part of doing business.

Tip: If your organization yanked flex during the recession, it?s time to restore it. As hiring picks up, companies that allow telework, flextime, part time, compressed or reduced workweeks, job sharing and other nontraditional work arrangements will have a competitive edge.

8. A mix works best

Workplace solutions are most effective when they work in tandem.

The Sodexo report identifies ?solutions? as everything from IT to workplace design to HR initiatives to wellness. In their own silos, each solution is limited.

Organizations that integrate their efforts to create a positive environment for employee engagement consider the physical workplace, the way employees work and their health and social needs before making changes or starting something new.

Tip: Include employees in the conversation about any proposed solution to a problem that stems from employee behavior?like lack of engagement, low productivity or high turnover. You might be surprised by how well they can solve their own problems, given the chance.

Engaged employees add to bottom line

It?s no surprise that underpaid, underappreciated employees tend to slack off on the job more than their better-motivated co-workers. But the performance gap between ?engaged? and ?disengaged? employees might startle you:

Wave properties of individual heavy molecules can also be observed experimentally/video shows development of interference pattern in (nearly) real time

This press release is available in German.

Quantum theory describes the world of atoms very precisely. Still, it defies our macroscopic conception of everyday's world due to its many anti-intuitive predictions. The wave-particle dualism probably is the best known example and means that matter may spread and interfere like waves. Now, an international team of researchers has recorded the interference process of individual molecules. The recordings were published by the journal Nature Nanotechnology online.

"Seeing how the interference pattern develops with every light spot, molecule after molecule, and how a basic principle of quantum mechanics is visualized enhances our understanding of the atomic world," explains Professor Marcel Mayor, who conducts research and teaches at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and the University of Basel.

For the experiment performed in cooperation with colleagues from the universities of Vienna and Tel Aviv, Mayor synthesized fluorescent phtalocyanin molecules having an atomic mass of up to 1298 AMU and consisting of up to 114 atoms. Then, the molecules were accelerated, sent as a slow beam through an optical grating, and deposited on the entrance vacuum window, where they were excited to fluoresce by a laser. For a period of 90 minutes, a fluorescence microscope observed the build-up of the interference pattern. Its setup has a sufficient sensitivity to exactly locate every individual molecule on the window with a precision of about 10 nanometers.

In the future, the setup might be used to study the so-called van-der-Waals interaction between molecules in the beam and those in the grating, which is reflected rather sensitively by the interference pattern. Researchers are also interested in finding out from which size and under which conditions particles behave quantum mechanically or classically, i.e. in the so-called decoherence. These findings may be the basis for novel applications, such as quantum computers. "But the many insights given by this experiment into the quantum world and its boundaries already are of high value," Mayor agrees with many experts, among others Bum Suk Zhao and Wieland Schllkopf from the Fritz Haber Institute, Berlin, who evaluate the experiment in the accompanying comment article in the same journal.
