Is Trouble Brewing with Katy Perry and Russell Brand?

Katy Perry and Russell Brand have both adamantly denied rumors that their marriage is in trouble. But here's something the couple can't deny: they spent Christmas on opposite sides of the globe. Us Weekly claims that Perry, 27, had originally planned to fly her family to Brand's hometown of London for Christmas, but changed her holiday plans after a "massive fight."

93% Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol

In the latest installment of the Mission: Impossible series, the IMF gets shut down after it's implication in the bombing of the Kremlin. Ethan Hunt and his top secret team embark on a globe trotting mission to clear up their name and capture the man behind the bombing who plans to begin a nuclear war. Let the thrill ride begin! As of now, I have not seen the other films in the series. The main reason I went to see this because there was a little treat shown before the movie that I was just dying to see. I'll get to that later. Also, the trailers sold me to the movie. They were very well put together and knew how to get action fans flocking to the theater. I thoroughly enjoyed the film. I've heard that none of the films have connected plots or story arcs so I was fine. Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol delivers some of the most fun you'll have at the movies this year. The film is fun-filled from start to finish and features what many recent action films lack these days. That is intelligence. The film is very smart, witty, and well planned out but it won't have you thinking like a psychological thriller. It's summertime entertainment for the Holidays. The story in this film isn't groundbreaking and I didn't find it very original. I also felt that there weren't enough surprises or twists. As I Look back at the movie, I don't think there were any. I enjoy those in an action movie. The premise is exciting and it was a pleasure to follow it. The action scenes are also very well done. Without giving away a whole lot, there is a scene involving Ethan Hunt and his partner, Benji, trying to sneak past a guarded area and they use very sly and funny techniques to complete the task. What I loved about this scene was the comedic value and the fact that there was no dialogue. It felt like watching an episode of Mr. Bean only with secret agents. Of all the action scenes, the main highlight involves Tom Cruise climbing up the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the talletst building in the world. Those with weak constitution who see this film in IMAX should be warned. This scene is pretty intense and could make you queasy. My hands were sweating. This scene is well shot and thrilling. I saw the film in IMAX and was sitting in the fourth row. Those who have seen movies in that format should know how that feels. The expensive price of admission my cousin and I paid to see this in IMAX was worth it. Many of the film's action scenes are shot with the glorious IMAX cameras and perfectly displayed on the immense screen thanks to the director, Brad Bird. However, I felt that he took advantage of the camera sometimes just to film explosions that only last a few seconds. The series has gotten famous directors to helm the films such as Brian DePalma, John Woo, and JJ Abrams. Brad Bird, who directed Pixar's The Incredibles and Ratatouille and the cult animated film, The Iron Giant, makes a great live action debut. I would love to see more action films directed by him and he should give Michael Bay some lessons! The shooting stlye in the film is grand and the cinematography was amazing. Thanks to Brad Bird, I have faith in Andrew Stanton (He's the best Pixar director in my opinion.) and his live-action sci-fi film, John Carter, which is out in March. Some of the action sequences feel like the ones featured in The Incredibles all thanks to the director. The performances in this film were pretty good. I like Tom Cruise and he plays a very cool spy. I think I'd rather go on a mission with him rather than James Bond. I haven't seen The Hurt Locker yet but if you've been reading the site's Weekly Ketchup, you may notice that Jeremy Renner is being considered for quite a few action films. He is playing Hawkeye in The Avengers and is taking the spotlight away from Matt Damon in The Bourne Legacy. I think he can carry an action movie and he is pretty good in this movie. However in the trailers, I felt that he was going to be a suspicious character and he really wasn't one in the film. Paula Patton also plays a good sidekick but Simon Pegg was such a delight! He shines in every moment he's in and is practically the film's show stealer. And that guy from Batman Begins who becomes The Scarecrow's first victim was also good during his short prescense. One of my issue's with the film were the villains. They weren't intimidating to me and were a little bland. My favorite of the baddies was the French assassin, Sabine Moreau, played by Lea Seydoux. She was actually quite intimidating and also contributes to the film's eye candy. In other words, she is very hot. The film also has a solid, well written script that has nifty humor and intelligence. Now I'm going to reveal the main reason why I saw the film. I was over at my cousin's house and we were discussing comic books. We got on the subject of Batman and discussed the new trailer for The Dark Knight Rises. I also told him that I saw the bootlegged version of the prologue and he wanted to see it. So we called our local IMAX to see if they were playing it, rounded up some buddies, and headed to the theater. The prologue is the first six minutes of the upcoming film. I saw a leaked version a few days before but since it was recorded with a camcorder, I was dismayed. From what I made up of it, I thought it was cool. Until I saw it on the IMAX screen, I was blown away. I was on the edge of the seat and the audience applauded when it was finished. I will definetly see the movie in IMAX. Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol is a great action film that is smart and amusing. It never fails to entertain but I think I would appreciate the ending more if I had seen the other films. When displayed in IMAX, it is a wonder to behold. The scenes shot with IMAX cameras take up the entire screen but the ones that are not just look like a Blu-Ray disc projected onto a six story screen. The film is great and it is the best espionage film since Casino Royale. I think that film is superior. So if you're looking for tons of fun and thrills at the movies, grab a ticket for this bad boy! "Science is sad."

Tulsa continues to struggle offensively. The Hurricane is averaging 60.9 points per game and shooting just 34.7 percent from the field this season.

Taleya Mayberry (16.6 points per game) and Taylor Hooker (10.9) continue to lead the team in scoring.

Nebraska Omaha is transitioning to Division I status. The team will join the Summit League next season.

By: RICH CAMPBELL | The Washington Times

Transforming the Washington Redskins from a 4-12 geriatric unit into a perennial Super Bowl contender never was going to be easy for executive vice president/head coach Mike Shanahan. Talent deficiencies were rampant on the NFL's oldest roster when he took over in January 2010.

As Shanahan nears the conclusion of a second consecutive season with double-digit losses, though, he has developed an appreciation for the magnitude of the building project.

"A lot longer than I first anticipated," he told reporters at Redskins Park on Monday afternoon. "We had less depth than I thought. We were a little bit older at a few different positions, and I thought we might keep those players a little bit longer than we did.

"But that's not a negative. You've just got to evaluate your squad on a day-to-day basis, a year-to-year basis, and put the best football team together. And I think that's what we're doing."

Shanahan addressed the big picture Monday, sounding like a coach who believes he will get to see his plan through to the next stage.

Redskins owner Daniel Snyder has fired coaches with better records than Shanahan's mark of 11-20, but Shanahan's message emphasizing the importance of stability has at least fostered self-confidence.

Although a win in Sunday's season finale at Philadelphia would only equal last season's total of six wins, progress is evident to the Redskins' top personnel decision-maker.

"I see a big difference from two years ago," Shanahan said. "We have a much younger football team. We have a lot more depth at a lot of different positions. I feel good with the type of players that we do have."

Many players agree. The Redskins overcame a slew of serious injuries to several of their top offensive players and have played competitive football during the second half of the season.?Starting running back Tim Hightower, first-string left guard Kory Lichtensteiger and two-time Pro Bowl tight end Chris Cooley were lost to season-ending injuries by the seventh game. And left tackle Trent Williams and tight end Fred Davis were suspended for violating the league's drug policy.

Nevertheless, three of their past four losses were by seven points or fewer, and they led in the other loss ? their 34-19 defeat against the New York Jets ? in the fourth quarter.

"We've got the right guys in this locker room," linebacker Brian Orakpo said. "Guys are fighting hard. We don't have any, really, issues as much. Guys play for each other. We've got a great coaching staff. We've got everything. We've got an owner that's doing everything possible to win. Just got to be optimistic."

Shanahan is, at least. A loss to the surging Eagles on Sunday would ensure his worst record in 18 seasons as an NFL head coach, but he senses progress, especially on defense.

The Redskins made upgrading defensive personnel last offseason a priority ? particularly the front seven ? and the unit has improved from 30th?to 17th?in yards allowed per play.

"I feel good about that," Shanahan said. "Not only do we have some first-teamers there, but we believe we have some second- and third-teamers there, and that's what you're looking for is depth in that front seven, front eight."

Much work remains, though, especially on offense. Only two teams have turned the ball over more than the Redskins' 34 giveaways. Washington ranks 21st?in the NFL with a 5.21 yards-per-play average.

Shanahan has discussed their need for playmakers, and the time to add some is approaching.

"We still need a good draft, a good free agency," he said. "We still need to improve from where we're at right now. Our record obviously dictates that, but I feel good about the football team and the direction we're headed."

NOTES: Running back Roy Helu was inactive for Saturday's 33-26 loss to the Minnesota Vikings because his knee and toe injuries were problematic. "We ran him about three hours before the game," Shanahan said. "We tried to get him to push off and do all the football-related drills, but I talked to him, and our gut was no."

Helu's replacement, Evan Royster, rushed for 132 yards on 19 carries. "I thought Evan made a lot of great cuts, and he was very productive throughout the whole game," Shanahan said.

Sea of Japan coast gets snow warning

Monday, Dec. 26, 2011

The Meteorological Agency issued a warning Sunday for blizzards and high waves in northern Japan, and said heavy snow is expected to hit coastal areas along the Sea of Japan through Tuesday.

It also warned of avalanches, lightning and tornadoes along the Sea of Japan coast.

More than 50 cm of snow had fallen within 24 hours as of 4 p.m. in several areas facing the Sea of Japan, with the town of Tsunan, Niigata Prefecture, receiving 79 cm, the agency said.

In the 24 hours through Monday evening, up to 90 cm of snow is expected to fall in the central Hokuriku region, 80 cm in Tohoku, 70 cm in the Kanto-Koshin area, 60 cm in Hokkaido, and 50 cm in the Kinki, Tokai and Chugoku regions.

Pandigital Personal Scanner/Converter?5x7 PanScn04

The Pandigital Personal Scanner/Converter?5x7 PanScn04 ($99.99 direct) is one of about 10 scanners Pandigital sells that are basically variations on a theme, with some branded with the Pandigital name and others branded as Kodak. The models vary primarily in the maximum size photo each can scan and whether they can scan strips of film and slides as well as prints. The PanScn04 is one of two models that scans prints only but can scan at up to 5 by 7 inches, making it the obvious choice if your collection of photos includes 5 by 7 inch prints, and you don't need to scan film.

The PanScn04 is nearly identical to the Kodak P570 Personal Photo Scanner ($99.99 direct, 3 stars) that I recently reviewed. In fact, the two differ even less than the Pandigital Personal Photo & Negative Scanner/Converter PanScn05 ($109.99 direct, 4 stars) and it's near twin, the Kodak P460 Personal Photo Scanner ($99.99 direct, 4 stars). At least the PanScn05 and P460 come in different colors, one black and one white. The only obvious physical difference between the PanScn04 and the P570 is the name on the front panel.

This isn't to say that there aren't any differences at all. The PanScn05 comes with a 1GB memory card to scan to instead of the P570's 2GB card. It also comes without Kodak EasyShare, which is basically a photo album program. EasyShare includes commands to print, send to email, and send to Kodak's Creative Center, where you can order photo books, photo mugs, and other products with your photos on them, as well as turn your photos into greeting cards and other items you can print yourself.

Whether Kodak EasyShare comes with your scanner or not isn't much of a difference, however, given that you can download the program from Kodak for free. In every other way, the two scanners seem to be almost identical. I saw little to no difference for setup or scan quality, although I saw a slight difference in speed.

Setup and Scanning
The PanScn04 measures just 1.8 by 7.6 by 3.3 inches (HWD) and offers a 5-inch-wide manual-feed slot in the front with a straight-through path to the back. Setup consists of inserting the supplied 1GB memory card in the front slot and plugging in the power cable.

To scan, you turn the scanner on, optionally set the resolution using a button that toggles between 300 and 600 pixels per inch (ppi), put a photo in one of the two supplied protective sleeves, and insert the sleeve into the input slot. Everything else is automatic, with the scanner grabbing the photo, feeding it, and scanning it to a JPG file, automatically cropping and otherwise choosing settings.

After you finish scanning, you can move the files to your computer on the memory card or connect to your system with the supplied USB cable, wait for the computer to see the memory card as a USB drive, and copy the files. You can also optionally install a utility that will let you scan directly to your computer.

As with the P570, the PanScn04 comes without a photo editor. However, that's consistent with the emphasis on ease of use, since having a photo editor would mean having to invest some time in learning how to use it. The assumption is that you can use the built in tools in your operating system, like the Windows ability to manage, print, and, to some minor extent, edit photos.

Scan Speed
The PanScn04 shares the P570's ability to let you scan almost as fast as the scanner can go. This is usually not true for manual-feed scanners, because the timed speed doesn't include the extra time you'll spend preparing each original or carefully feeding it so it will go in straight.

The PanScn04 eliminates that extra time by coming with two protective sleeves. Start scanning with the photo inserted into one, and you'll have plenty of time to remove the photo from the other sleeve, put the photo away, insert a new photo in the sleeve, and have it ready when the first scan finishes. You'll need a little extra time to insert each photo, but that shouldn't be more than a second or two per photo.

In my tests, whether scanning to its memory card or to a computer, the PanScn04 took a consistent 15 to 17 seconds to scan at 600 ppi, and 15 to 16 seconds at 300 ppi. These times are essentially the same as for the P570 with one exception. Scanning to a computer at 600 ppi took almost twice as long for the P570, a result that was surprising enough so that I retested both scanners to confirm that I had the times right. There are several possible reasons for the difference, including both hardware and software issues, but Pandigital was unable to provide an explanation.

Also, to put these speeds in context, note that the P460 and PanScn05, which both use a smaller sleeve because of their 4 by 6 maximum scan size, took 10 seconds with the same photos at 300 ppi. Even so, the key point is that the PanScn05 is fast enough so it won't leave you feeling like your waiting for it.

Scan Quality
Scan quality, unfortunately, is a close match to the P570's quality, which means it shares the same limitations, with a loss of resolution that comes out as soft focus if you reprint the scans and a loss of both shadow detail (detail based on shading in dark areas) and detail based on shading in bright areas. As with the P570, however, the quality is good enough for casual photographers who just want to get their snapshots into digital format, and don't mind losing some quality in the process.

If you care more about good quality than ease of scanning, you should consider a flatbed scanner, like the Editors' Choice Epson Perfection V300 Photo ($99.99 direct, 4 stars). However, scanning with a flatbed is more cumbersome than using a sheet feeder. Lower quality is the tradeoff you get for the easier scanning. As with the Kodak P570, if you don't mind losing a little image quality and want an easy way to scan your 5- by 7-inch photos, the Pandigital Personal Scanner/Converter?5x7 PanScn04 can do the job, and it may well be the right scanner for your needs.

(AP) ? The stadium was only two-thirds full again. The Cardinals were on another one of their incredible comebacks, threatening to derail the Cincinnati Bengals' surprising playoff surge.

A pair of tangled up feet made the difference.

The Bengals moved one win away from the playoffs Saturday, holding on for a 23-16 victory over Arizona that secured only their third winning record in the past 21 years.

Cincinnati (9-6) can clinch the final AFC wild card berth by beating Baltimore at Paul Brown Stadium next Sunday. The Bengals moved a game ahead of the Jets, who fell to 8-7 with a 29-14 loss to the Giants on Saturday.

"It's been a big year for me and for this team," rookie quarterback Andy Dalton said. "It's something we believed we had a chance to do. We weren't getting much credit from outside. We'll find out next week."

Dalton threw two more touchdown passes, becoming only the fourth rookie to have 20 in a season, and Cincinnati got a break when the NFL's top comeback team tripped itself up in the closing minutes.

Wide-open receiver Early Doucet tripped at the goal line and went down, letting a fourth-down pass fall incomplete with 1:12 left. The Cardinals (7-8) got the ball one more time, but the clock ran out after a completion.

A few minutes later, the Jets' loss put the Bengals in position to reach the playoffs. New York would have won the tiebreaker if both teams won out.

"We started this quite a while ago ? seems like just yesterday," coach Marvin Lewis said. "But now we're right where we want to be at the end."

Their rookie quarterback put them in position.

Dalton threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Jermaine Gresham and a 19-yarder to Jerome Simpson, who did a somersault over a defender and landed on both feet in the end zone.

Dalton joined Peyton Manning (26), Charlie Conerly (22) and Dan Marino (20) as the only NFL rookies to throw 20 touchdown passes.

Down 23-0 heading into the fourth quarter, the NFL's best comeback team nearly pulled off its most improbable one yet. Arizona took advantage of Cedric Benson's two fumbles, getting a pair of touchdown passes by John Skelton and Jay Feely's field goal with 3:16 left.

The Cardinals then had their chance to pull even. The Bengals ran an all-out blitz on fourth down from the Cincinnati 17-yard line, and Doucet wound up uncovered at the goal line. Skelton lofted the ball into the end zone, but Doucet tripped and fell.

"It was a blitz and nobody was there," Doucet said. "It was one of those deals where I hadn't hooked it up and my feet got tangled. It's a play I should've made. It was my fault. That's a play I normally make."

The Cardinals had their four-game winning streak snapped and were eliminated from playoff contention.

Cincinnati's defense dominated the first three quarters. Arizona didn't cross midfield until Skelton completed a pass with 13:25 to go, but piled up 208 yards in the final quarter.

Skelton started for the second consecutive week in place of Kevin Kolb, who hasn't fully recovered from a concussion. Skelton was 23 of 44 for 297 yards with three interceptions and five sacks that helped the Bengals get the 23-0 lead.

It could have been worse. Mike Nugent, the NFL's most accurate kicker, missed field goals of 35 and 48 yards in the first half.

Arizona has rallied from fourth-quarter deficits six times this season, one shy of the NFL record. The Cardinals have won three games in overtime, tying the league record.

They couldn't do it one more time.

"Yeah, we're a second-half team," Skelton said. "That's how it has been all year. But in the end, it was too little, too late."

Dalton was 18 of 31 for 154 yards and two touchdowns on a sunny, 39-degree afternoon in front of only 41,273 fans. The Bengals have sold out only one of their seven home games, when the Steelers brought thousands of fans.

Dalton's second touchdown pass had a highlight finish.

Simpson got open for a catch-and-run to the goal line. With Daryl Washington between him and the end zone, Simpson jumped and twirled past the linebacker, landing on both feet in the end zone and raising both arms like a triumphant gymnast.

"One of the key parts for me was I stuck the landing," Simpson said. "I stuck the landing like a gymnast. That was probably one of the most surprising of all the plays in my career. It was pretty awesome, I thought."

For most of the game, the Cardinals couldn't do anything right. Rookie cornerback Patrick Peterson picked off a Dalton pass in the third quarter, but the interception was nullified by Arizona's second roughing-the-passer penalty of the game.

Worse, Peterson hurt his left hamstring on the play, pulling up on the return. The first-round pick left the game and didn't return. He wore a protective boot after the game.

"He's got a strain, it's not a tear," coach Ken Whisenhunt said. "We're fortunate that it doesn't appear to anything long term."

Notes: Beanie Wells became the first Cardinal to run for 1,000 yards and 10 touchdowns in a season. ... After the game, the Bengals made a buy-one, get-one-free offer to season ticket holders, trying to fill the stadium for the final game. ... A.J. Green, playing with a strained right shoulder, had two catches for 25 yards. He passed Cris Collinsworth's club record for a rookie with 1,013 yards on the season.

Limit Cold Medications During Pregnancy, Experts Advise (HealthDay)

WEDNESDAY, Dec. 21 (HealthDay News) -- It's prudent to limit the use of over-the-counter cold and flu medications during pregnancy, experts say.

This is because some medications may contain substances that are potentially harmful to developing fetuses, or that have not been well-studied for use in pregnant women.

"Every year around this time, we get a significant number of calls from pregnant and breast-feeding women in California who are battling colds and are worried about which meds they can and can't take," said Christina Chambers, professor of pediatrics at University of California, San Diego and program director at the California Teratogen Information Service.

To help expectant mothers who are sick this holiday season, Chambers offered these cold medicine safety tips:

  • Take as little as possible. Over-the-counter cold remedies could contain up to six ingredients for a wide array of symptoms, such as a cough, runny nose or headache. Choose medications that contain just the ingredients you need for your specific symptoms.
  • Avoid oral decongestants in early pregnancy. When taken during the first trimester, these medications have been linked to a slightly heightened risk of abdominal wall defects in fetuses. Saline drops or nasal sprays may be good short-term alternatives.
  • Be cautious about herbal ingredients. Many over-the-counter medications may contain herbal ingredients that have not been evaluated for use during pregnancy.
  • Don't overdo it with lozenges. These drops may soothe a sore throat but they often contain mostly sugar. Lozenges may also contain zinc and vitamin C, which should be taken only in limited daily doses (80 to 100 milligrams per day for vitamin C and 11 milligrams per day for zinc) during pregnancy.
  • Choose alcohol-free cough syrups. Opt for cough remedies that do not contain alcohol.

Mexico disbands entire police force in top port (AP)

VERACRUZ, Mexico ? The entire police force in the major Gulf coast port city of Veracruz was dissolved on Wednesday and Mexican officials sent the Navy in to patrol.

The Veracruz state government said the decision is part of an effort to root out police corruption and start from zero in the state's largest city.

State spokeswoman Gina Dominguez said 800 police officers and 300 administrative employees were laid off. At a press conference, she said they can apply for jobs in a state police force, but must meet stricter standards for an agency with officers "who are better trained and more committed and who can deliver under our current security circumstances."

Armed marines barricaded police headquarters Wednesday and Navy helicopters were flying above the city where 35 bodies were dumped in September. It was one of the worst gang attacks of Mexico's drug war.

The change was agreed upon Monday by Veracruz Gov. Javier Duarte and federal Interior Secretary Alejandro Poire.

Mexico's army has taken over police operations several times before, notably in the border city of Ciudad Juarez and the border state of Tamaulipas. But Veracruz becomes the first state to completely disband a large police department and use marines as law enforcers. There are about 2,400 marines in the state of Veracruz.

Dominguez said the Navy operations will last only until the state can train more of its own police. Duarte already had disbanded a police force in the state's capital of Xalapa, but in that case state agents immediately replaced city police.

President Felipe Calderon has pushed an ambitious process for vetting all of Mexico's 460,000 police officers. His administration allocated $331 million for 200 cities to train and re-equip municipal police forces.

However governors have complained they lack the resources to ensure their police forces are clean.

Veracruz is a common route for drugs and migrants coming from the south. It was first dominated by the Gulf Cartel and then its former armed wing, the Zetas, took over after the two split. The state saw a rise in crime this spring after a government offensive in neighboring Tamaulipas scared drug criminals away to Veracruz.

But the dumping of the 35 bodies shocked Mexico as it turned port into a battleground between the Zetas and a gang aligned with the Sinaloa Cartel, led by Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman.

Facebook agrees to changes to improve transparency

(AP) ? Facebook Inc. has agreed to make several changes to its services to improve transparency and better protect the personal data of its millions of users outside of the U.S., following an in-depth audit of its international headquarters that was released Wednesday.

The social media company, based in Palo Alto, California, agreed to changes including asking European users if they wanted to partake in its Facial Recognition, reworking its policies of retaining and deleting private data, and reducing the amount of information collected about people who are not logged into Facebook, the company said in response to the report of the Irish Data Protection Commissioner.

Facebook's international headquarters are based in Dublin, Ireland, a member of the European Union. This means the company is required to comply with European data privacy laws, which are more stringent than those that apply in the United States, particularly regarding how long data can be retained.

"Facebook has committed to either implement, or to consider, other 'best practice' improvements recommended by the data protection commissioner," the company said following the announcement of the report. "Meeting these commitments will require intense work over the next six months."

The company has agreed to present its results in a follow-up to the report in July.

Facebook has been scrutinized for its privacy practices in the U.S., too. In November, the company agreed to submit to government audits of its privacy practices every other year for the next two decades as part of a settlement with the Federal Trade Commission. The FTC's complaint had alleged that the company exposed details about users' lives without getting their consent, as legally required.

It is standard for Ireland's data protection commissioner to audit any high-tech companies in the country to ensure that their practices are in keeping with the European law, and make recommendations to help them to meet those standards, should they fall short.

"It is not the object of the audit, to decide whether there is a breach of law," Billy Hawkes, the data protection commissioner, told reporters. "It is to help an organization achieve full compliance with law, put their compliance into best practice.

Facebook has repeatedly come under fire in Europe for a raft of complaints ranging from accusations that it sells personal data to advertisers ? a charge that the Irish authority said its findings did not uphold ? its Friend Finder application and "archiving" of data that users have deleted.

This is especially the case in German-speaking nations, where laws protecting individual privacy and the use of personal information are even more far-reaching than those covering the European Union, where Facebook has run up against several complaints from local data protection authorities.

A group of Austrian students calling themselves Europe vs. Facebook also took up the crusade, filing a series of 22 complaints directly with the Irish authorities in what they said was an attempt to force Facebook to follow the rule of the law.

"We are thrilled," said Max Schrems, 24, who speaks for the group. "It is far more than what has previously been achieved in Europe. There are a lot of things that they have to change, far more than what they have had to change before."

Arianna Huffington: Sunday Roundup

This week, the Pentagon marked the official end to the war in Iraq with a brief ceremony in a secure part of the Baghdad airport -- helicopters hovering protectively overhead. Although Defense Secretary Leon Panetta later declared that the cost paid by America was "worth it," a look at the price tag offers a more sobering assessment: 4,487 U.S. military personnel killed, over 2,000 U.S. government contractors killed, over 40,000 American troops wounded, over 100,000 Iraqis killed, at least 2 million Iraqis displaced from their homes, and a final tab that could ultimately reach $4 trillion doled out by U.S. taxpayers (a far cry from the $50 billion to $80 billion the Defense Department originally predicted it would cost). And beyond the cost in lives and treasure are the less quantifiable costs we'll be paying for years to come, including the strengthening of Iran and the weakening of America's moral standing in the world.

Wholesale prices up a modest 0.3 pct. last month

(AP) ? Wholesale prices rose a modest 0.3 percent last month as U.S. companies paid more for such items as food and pharmaceuticals. But energy prices barely rose, keeping inflation in check.

In the 12 months ending in November, wholesale prices have increased 5.7 percent, down from a 5.9 percent year-over-year pace in October, the Labor Department said Thursday. It's the smallest yearly increase since March. The department's producer price index measures price changes before they reach consumers.

Excluding the volatile food and energy categories, the so-called "core" index rose 0.1 percent, after a flat reading the previous month. In the 12 months ending in November, the core index rose 2.9 percent, up a yearly pace of 2.8 percent in October.

Most economists say they think inflation has peaked and will slowly decline next year. That's because prices for oil and many agricultural commodities have fallen from their highs this spring. Slower growth in China and a possible recession in Europe have reduced global demand for energy and other goods.

Producer price inflation "appears to have peaked and begun a slow retreat," Steven Wood, an economist at Insight Economics, said in a note to clients.

Lower price growth means consumers will have more buying power, potentially boosting consumer spending. The jump in gas and food prices earlier this year limited the ability of consumers to buy other goods, thereby slowing the economy.

Consumer spending rebounded in the July-September quarter as prices eased. The stronger spending helped increase growth to an annual rate of 2 percent from a slight 0.9 percent in the first half of the year. Economists expect consumer spending to rise again in the last three months of this year and think growth could top 3 percent.

Wholesale food prices rose 1 percent last month, driven higher by a sharp increase in the cost of vegetables. Prices for lettuce, broccoli and cauliflower jumped sharply.

Chicken and other meat prices also rose. But with the price of grains and other farm goods declining, food prices will likely follow suit, economists noted.

The cost of pharmaceuticals and autos increased, pushing up the core index. But prices for pickup trucks and industrial machinery declined.

Federal Reserve policymakers, like many private economists, predict inflation will fall next year. That would give the central bank more latitude to hold down interest rates and potentially take other steps to stimulate the economy.

The Fed declined to make any new moves at its latest meeting Tuesday. It reiterated its commitment to keep the benchmark short-term rate it controls at nearly zero through mid-2013. If there were signs that inflation was increasing to worrisome levels, the Fed would likely raise rates.

The central bank said last month that it expects consumer inflation to fall from about 2.8 percent this year to roughly 1.7 percent next year. That's in the Fed's preferred range of core inflation of about 1.7 percent to 2 percent. Economists at Wells Fargo expect it to drop to 1.8 percent by the end of next year.

A small amount of inflation can be good for the economy. It encourages businesses and consumers to spend and invest money sooner rather than later, before inflation erodes its value.
